You give yourself a break! You take baby steps and everything one day at a time. You congratulate yourself for taking a stand for yourself and your child and taking a toxic man out of the picture. You rely on friends and family (even far away) for help, advice and support. [ Reply | More ]

do you have a support group or some sort of way to take care of yourself? what happens when we become parents is that often we tend to take away so much from us for the dc, and if you were in a violent relationship, this can be exacerbated-you learn to feel like you aren't worth much. so, you need to find ways to take care of you. moving closer to your family may help, may not. but doing something to take care of yourself is good. single parent support group, counseling (maybe you have some ptsd if there were violence or any sort of emotional abuse). sorry you are struggling, but if you were able to leave the relationship, that shows a huge amount of courage-no doubt you will be able to get through this and raise your dc into being a happy, healthy person. Sorry to sound so confused, but which part isn't true? And what tests are you talking about if not the OLSAT and WPPSI? [ Reply | More ]

actually that isn't true. event he ERB says it isn't. NYC kids tend to be precocious on certian things and may test much higher at 4 than at 7. [ Reply | More ]

UNIS has a more interesting, eclectic peer group, but non necessarily a more academic peer group. UN families do not have to test to get in. In some cases (long posts) they are virtually guarenteed admission. [ Reply | More ]

why UNIS? it is just 3rd tier? [ Reply | More ]

You need to get over the whole tier thing. First of all, UNIS isn't like other schools and doesn't really fit into that whole schema. Second, it's an excellent academic environment where dc can get the IB curriculum, it has what must be the most diverse student population of any school in the city, it goes from K-12, has amazing facilities. LL is a terrific public school, but the only thing it has going for it over UNIS is that it's free. And if OP says money isn't a problem, then UNIS wins hands-down. [ Reply | More ]

UNIS essentially track its students based on ability. Some students do a full IB curriculum but others do not. Of those that do, some do higher level coursework and some do not. If OP's dc is that smart, she's looking at a full IB program with higher level coursework. The intelligence of the peer group won't be a problem. [ Reply | More ]

I went to UNIS through 8th grade. Granted, a long time ago, but unless something major has changed, was a great experience. I speak French and had a better sense of the greater world when I got to college than many of my peers. If I had to send my kid to private school (and if I had the money) it would be there. Because we didn't have money and the cost shot up for high school. I was sad to leave, but went to Bronx Science and had a different kind of good experience. I'm still friends with some UNIS folks, but there was definitely the element of the "diplobrats" that it was probably good I got away from. We were one of the very few UWS families there back then (this was a long time ago, when the UWS was considered slummy by a lot of the families I went to school with, and we could never return invitations to the Hamptons or Switzerland or whatever. So it was good that I went to public school for high school and got a bit of a perspective. [ Reply | More ]

I did. I mean, high school is a tough time for most people and I was no exception, but I met some of the best friends and most decent humans at Science than anywhere since. Smart, yes, of course, but also good people. [ Reply | More ]

unis takes all the UN kids (no erbs for un kids) and they stay for max of 4 yrs. my dd's best friend is leaving from UNIS next year, just because of that i will stick with a school where at least kids are not expected to be leaving all the time. at elementary school level, def LL [ Reply | More ]

thanks. I guess I don't understand being so precise about the "element" your child will be socializing with. IMHO, you can learn a lot from people who may not be academically exactly where you are. Most people have something to offer. My best friend from high school (still my best friend) was an average student, while I was above average. But she taught me so much about people and the way the world works. I'd be bereft without that kind of education. [ Reply | More ]

In which way? There will be more of a range at UNIS, but since they track (unlike LL) it will not slow down your dc. And there is far more diversity at UNIS than at LL, of all kinds. [ Reply | More ]
