[ - ] I think moving to the suburbs has brought out some hidden Martha Stewart in me. Getting new bedding, and not only do I want to monogram them, I want a monogram designed special for it. Kicker is, I didn't even take DH's name. He looked at me like I could be a body snatcher when I told him what I was doing. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My DC go/went to Elmwood -- technically it's in White Plains (PO), but location-wise is like Ardsley/Hartsdale. There are also tons of synagogue/church schools. The process varies from school to school -- but it's not like NYC (in terms of interviews and hefty deposits/tuition and all that). Some schools have 2's programs (including Elmwood); others start at 3. You may be able to find a spot for Sept. -- there are sometimes summertime openings (especially if you're flexible about days/times). Did you find a house? Which neighborhood? [ Reply | More ]

thank you so much for this info. We will be in Heathcote. We would have preferred Greenacres (we looked at a couple places on Greenacres Ave and I had visions of doing up our 'we have moved' cards with mine and DH's faces superimposed on the American Gothic painting. (I'm sure it's been done before!) But we found a cute house in Heathcote so that is what we settled on. Anyway, dd is only 15 mos now, but if I were staying in Manhattan I'd have to start the whole crazy process this fall. I can't wait to get out of the city. [ Reply | More ]

No problem! I wish I had thought of that for our change of address cards! :) I like all of the neighborhoods (think that there are nice things about each) -- and you probably have more space than we do (your lot size!). I believe that registration begins in Jan. for most schools -- but call around beforehand (once you've moved) to be sure (we moved in the middle of the year and lucked out and found a spot for #1 -- and then enrolled #2 as a sibling, so I'm a little iffy on the timeline!). What's more important to you? Academics or not being a minority? BTW, if they offer Mandarin, that would be a big plus for me. On the other hand, if they're too traditional/structured (which most DOE schools are), then I would not like it. If the white school is progressive, I might like it more despite low test score. Huh? Some of the schools in Chinatown boast higher test scores than majority white schools. Look at DOE reports and insideschools ratings. Their scores are through the roof, including English. [ Reply | More ]
