We are not fixated on schools. Recently met two women who went to TT private high school here which now costs around 25K and they went to these dinky little colleges, got married and are aside from sahming never had great careers or incomes to show for it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

But - and I'm a public school mom - isn't education about educating the child? Not about what they end up doing in life? I just want my dc to be happy and do work that makes her happy. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, no, not necessary. I really believe that loving your work is the most important thing in life. Well, second to finding & living with someone you love and who loves you back. If dc is successful in both those things, I will be happy too. [ Reply | More ]

That's absurd. We don't all want that. Especially those of us that have it now. DH is super successful and makes loads of money but has almost no life outside of work. Neither him nor I want that for our kids. [ Reply | More ]

Republicans believe in less government and more private enterprise. They believe people will be better served/helped by charity, business, and individuals than by the government. So it seems that Social Work would be the perfect job for a Republican. [ Reply | More ]

no, b/c maybe their parents don't do stuff like that. They should be happy that school was paid for, they got an opportunity for a great education and hopefully they took advantage of it. Just b/c their "career path" isn't what OP thinks it should be. [ Reply | More ]

ok. I think of it a bit differently. They got a great education, hopefully they took advantage of it and then they were lucky enough to do what they wanted to with their lives. A good education isn't just about what you can produce financially, it's also about being well-rounded and happy and satisfied. If they are those things, then who cares. [ Reply | More ]

I went to a TT school (K-12), then to a well-regarded liberal arts college (but not the "best"), and then taught nursery school for many years (and received a master's from a very good in early childhood education from a top school). I was a great teacher and I loved the age -- even though some said that it was a "waste" of my schooling. [ Reply | More ]

Eventually. (My first job was at a neighborhood, no name school -- which had its positives and negatives.) I now work in admissions (not in NYC), but miss the classroom and the little ones sometimes. My point (in posting) is that everyone takes a different path -- and I consider myself lucky to have found a career that I enjoy (no matter the "prestige"). [ Reply | More ]
