Similar post to below. Our DC is going to PS.116 G&T. Very disappointed. Thinking about applying private TT in fall(fall birthday). Is anybody in same situation? Should I try TT only and don't bother 2-3rd tier? Or should I look more broadly? Do private schools(even lower tiers) offer more than G&T public, or we should stay with 116? TIA. OP: We were hoping for Hunter or Anderson. DC is very smart. Feels like needs bright peer group. Also we wanted K-12, or K-8 option. I just wonder what kind of private we look for. [ Reply | More ]

You don't think the other high scoring kids will be a good enough peer group? I suggest home schooling if nothing is good enough for Albert. [ Reply | More ]

NP: If you want bright peer group, K-12 or K-8 then you should apply for 1st grade to all citywides, not just Anderson. Why not take OLSAT again next year and if DC scores well again, go for Anderson, Nest and TAG for 1st grade?? Signed mom w/ DC who scored 99 on OLSAT and SB and got 3rd choice (district G&T). oh. so you are disappointed in 116 because DC is very smart. I'm sure all the kids who got 98's and 99's who are going to 116s G&t are not as smart as your child. [ Reply | More ]

What? I'm not OP and I know nothing about 116. I don't know why OP should try for "lesser" privates when she has this G&T if she is worried about the peer group. [ Reply | More ]

OP: No flame please. I am not saying 116 has weak peer group. My concern is more curriculum. 116 is under DOE and district G&Ts don't offer extras. [ Reply | More ]

There are at least 16 kids who turned down Hunter. If you can afford private and it sounds like you do, then just apply to TTs and see what happens. [ Reply | More ]

We turned down our g&t offer and will apply to a broad range of privates for next fall. Downfall, dd is a fall birthday and will have to do k over again in certain privates (non-parochial). Funny, we listed 116 as our first choice and would have gone their gladly. It is our neighborhood school and space issues aside, has a lot to offer. It is v. interesting to read what schools people are disappointed with...too bad there are no waitlists...another short sighted DOE (or should I say DOPE) decision. For what its worth, I would stick with 116....I know so many kids who are in or were in the g&t program there who got into v. good middle schools and/or high schools coming from there (upper lab, salk, and styvesant!). why on earth would you ever send your kid to a school you don't like? you will poison your kid's first experience with school. And if he's as smart as you say, he will know. Just homeschool him. [ Reply | More ]

If you know you don't like 116 why on earth would you send dc there to begin with? Just stay in the preschool. If the teacher gets wind of your attitude she may well sink your dc [ Reply | More ]

yes. We r doing k this year b'cause another year of prek will bore him. we only tried for Anderson and nest and did not get either. reading and doing math at 2nd grade level. Am concerned with the prospect of repeating k, but think it will be better than another year in prek [ Reply | More ]

yes just took erbs:99/99/99. not sure yet where applying. we r starting to become familiar with the options. the scary thing is, after really syudying what is out there, compounded with the competition, there r not that many options. We could not even come up with a list of 6. [ Reply | More ]

PS 166. DC reads at 4th grade level and 3rd grade math. DC is ready for K so that's what we got and that's where she is going( also has fall birthday). You should also look at The School at Columbia. It's private but follows the public school age cut off. DC could go private there without repeating a grade. Admissions applications are by lottery only. [ Reply | More ]

np: a good G&T is superior to the school at columbia. cannot imagine giving up a top G&T for it. the kids are very, very mixed in terms of ability (often the kids of powerful faculty whose kids didn't get in anywhere else and who pulled strings at the university + community kids who never attended preschool). this women is obviously off her rocker for not taking 116 for the K year and keeping her very smart child behind. I got shut out last year K for my dd. took the local G&T K class and did not prep for Olsat/BRSA this year. guess what? Nest here we come. What a fool. [ Reply | More ]

Why don't you give 116 a chance before you plan on leaving? Maybe you and your dc will like it. Also, the 116 teachers/admin might not like that you've just arrived and a month later you give them a school report to fill out for your private school applications. [ Reply | More ]

You don't understand. K is the big entry point. Want to wait a few years? I don't think so. You don't have time to give a chance. We have to move very quickly for private application if that is what you want. [ Reply | More ]
