true, but smart parents won't just put their smart, social verbal dc just anywhere. Personally, I would skip the lower tier schools and go public if TT were not an option. [ Reply | More ]

We know that. But not all families are willing to settle for any private. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I respect that, but then they are not "shut-outs" If someone only applies to HM and does not get in, the DC is not a shut-out [ Reply | More ]

Sometimes they do if they need a lot of FA. [ Reply | More ]

all you shutouts cite FA as the reason, but chances are you would not have gotten a spot either way. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not a shutout, so please stop with the presumptuous "all you..." This does happen to some people. That's why I began with the word SOMETIMES, I'm not claiming it's a universal explanation. [ Reply | More ]

My dc are at a TT ongoing. But I've seen other people with smart, social, verbal dc and nice parents shut out, or offered acceptances w/out enough aid. It happens. I'm not sure why that's so tough for you to believe. [ Reply | More ]

Every family with a dc with 98 or 99 who asked for A LOT of FA (70% or more) all got placed a private with enough FA that I know of. [ Reply | More ]

we gave up lower tier school for anderson recently. very smart dc, and only signed the contract for the chance that dc would not place well in public. happily forfeited the money. felt dc would not be with like peers. some of the kids I know going to the private are average at best we were planning to apply out in a couple of years. maybe not, but we did get into a couple of privates. luckily dc is very smart. maybe didn't get tt because of us, who knows? but we definitely felt anderson was a better option than the private we had in hand. [ Reply | More ]

Nursery school teacher here: over the years, I have had some shut outs -- and, in every instance, there was some sort of "explanation." Maybe the ERBs were scattered and the family didn't look at a range of schools, maybe the parents were PITAs (and even if the school report was nice, the ongoing schools could tell), maybe DC had difficult playdates and school visits. That being said, I agree with this advice -- if you apply broadly and act interested on all tours/interviews, you should be okay. At a certain point, it does become a numbers game and DOAs say that they WL DC who would "fit" at the school, that they just don't have enough space for everyone. [ Reply | More ]

agree that there are often explanations, but what surprises me is that many of the kids who do get in could have "explanations" that are very similar (PITA parents, behavioral probs, scatter). so my question is why do some of these kids get in anyway? [ Reply | More ]

You never know who has connections or which PITA families were able to pull it together during the application process or what "brokering" went on behind the scenes. Sometimes that side of it *doesn't* make a lot of sense -- but the shut outs can be "explained." [ Reply | More ]

connections, donations (we know 2 kids who got off the wl's this year because parents told me they and other family members made big donations-enough for naming rights essentially in both cases)-depending on the school, this can trump a lot [ Reply | More ]

I think I agree. Unfortunately, I know many shutouts this year, and there are issues--ranging from behavioral problems, difficult parents, erb issues, parents not applying to enough schools, etc. That said, I think this year was particularly brutal, especially for boys, and in a another year with better odds, many of the shutouts would have gotten placed. add wealthy to that description, and I'd agree. FA can be a deal-breaker, though. [ Reply | More ]
