^^^and my vote is for waiting. Your first probably isn't even walking yet. If you get pregnant immediately, I think having a 20 month old and a newborn would be very very difficult. Mine will be 3 years apart, which feels much more manageable to me! [ Reply | More ]

If you would really like another one, then start trying as soon as you feel up to it. At 35, you are hovering around the age when fertility drops off considerably. You may get pg first time, but you won't know til you try. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] any freelance graphic designers on? i'm just wondering how happy you are working on your own, or if you have any advice. i've been basically freelance since dd was born 5 yrs ago, taking on few projects by choice, and am not super happy with the overall situation. money isn't a issue; i could stop working and we'd be ok, but i really *want* to still feel professionally alive and connected to the design world. being freelance gives me a lot of good time w/ dd, which is great...but i feel like i'm trying to design in a vaccum and would love to be in a more collaborative setting. i'm starting to lose confidence in my abilities and miss having feedback. was hoping to return to a more full-time situation this year, but now i'm expecting #2...and starting to feel quite depressed. i'm not worried about not having enough work. i have enough work through strong connections...but the isolation of working alone 100% of the time is getting to me. until 5 years ago i was happily working in much more collaborative enviornments, but when dd was born, i decided to be independent, but it's been very lonely. not sure how to get back on the right track, also b/c i've become pretty disconnected with other designers. Hmmm. I freelance write/edit, and I know what you're saying. Can you find/organize professional events (drinks w/colleagues, prof'l organization receptions) as a way to get out and socialize? Or if you really need feedback, how about setting up a sort of "group office," as described in the NYT last week. Everyone would have a cubicle or desk and you could work there (drop in) as necessary. Freelancing is family-friendly work, but often lonely. [ Reply | More ]

thanks for your good ideas. i'll look for the times article and keep this idea in the back of my mind. could be a good solution for next year (currently not feasible as i recently rented a new office space, and it's too small for "group office"). i wish there were a freelancer-moms group out there (maybe there is and i just don't know...). it's good to know i'm not the only one who finds freelancing to be a bit lonely. Why don't you try posting somewhere like Craigslist to set up a group of freelance graphic designers to meet up on a monthly basis etc? A bit like a book club - very informal and you could meet at a Starbucks or somewhere like that to start off with. Be frank and explain it is because you need to mingle with more designers, and suggest a topical design theme for each evening - maybe one person could present some findings and then everyone could discuss. I can not get over the number of mothers that want to come along and bring their younger kids. They all claim they'll pay their way but it makes it so complicated since they want me to get tix so they can sit with us. I tried very politely suggesting that if they just drop their dds off. Then, I decided it wasn't worth the drama and I would pay for everyone. But I just got a call saying that a mom needs to bring her 13 y.o. son. Huh? 7.5 months. Can you not figure this out (don't mean to sound harsh) or is there a reason why you would not want to say how many months as opposed to weeks you are? Weeks only mean something to women who have had babies, and some men. People who have no direct experience of pregnancy still think in terms of months, and weeks are meaningless to them. op: I do say 7.5 mos to the uninitiated. DH keeps telling I'm wrong--that I am 6.5 mos, or "in my 7th month" (which I find acceptable). Then asked another friend, who has had two kids, and she agreed w/ DH. FWIW, I think they are both wrong, but I was curious as to how others would respond. I can always count on UBers to assume idiocy on the part of the poster though. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] If you have a cleaning person, do they do things like clean shelves in pantry, garbage cans, shower curtain? We've had same person cleaning once a week for over a year and she has never done any of these things. If I ask her, she says its and extra charge because it is through a service. Trying to figure out if this type of thing is usually included. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

that generally falls under heavy cleaning. I have been looking for such a service that would come in once a month or so to do such things as that, as well as clean under the bed, ceiling fans etc. In NYC--if anyone has any recs, let me know! [ Reply | More ]

Mine does windows, cooker, fridge, bins etc. She does the usual clean and then rotates the extras. We have her through an agency but previous cleaners from them have not been so thorough. I think she doesn't like to see us living in a mess! [ Reply | More ]

if you pay her a flat fee for apartment cleaning that makes sense. if you pay her an hourly fee, then that would mean more hours therefore higher cost. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] my 10mo really loves his nanny. Its very sweet - she came this AM and he started kicking with excitement and then lay his head on her shoulder when she held him. That makes me happy. And sad at the same time. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

op: i'm more happy than sad, b/c he clearly knows I'm the mom and he does the same thing for me when I come home. I also know over the course of his life that I will always be his mom and I want him to be happy when I'm at work. But sometimes I have to tell myself this a few times in the car on the way to work in the AM. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's so so so much better than having to convince yourself that you have a good nanny in the face of maybe not much evidence. Imagine that situation!! But I understand how you feel -- it's totally natural. [ Reply | More ]

I know exactly what you mean, but now that my DD is 2.5 yo (and we've had the same nanny since she was 6 months), it is so wonderful that DD has another adult that she loves, and who loves her. I was a little jealous for a while, but even though DD spends more of her day with the nanny than with me, I'm still the mom and we both know that! [ Reply | More ]
