[ - ] Oh my good god - Brooke Shields wrote a chidren's book now? Why do all celebrities think they are talented enough to write a children's book? Why do publishing companies publish them? Who is buying this crap? So annoying. I've never read one children's book by a celebrity that I liked. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

then no wonder some of them suck. if they're not treated with respect or expected to be more than an adult version of a teen babysitter, of course, they'll be irresponsible with your child. I deplore this attitude. The person is caring for your child in your stead, treat them like more than a servant. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.01.08, 02:49 PM Flag

i don't think that treating a nanny like a servant only comes down to hourly wage. my nanny knows that she can go elsewhere and make more $ and if she needed to do that i would understand, OTOH, she knows that we pay what we can afford and that we are considerate of her as a person and she values that. my teen sitter gets $10/hr. FT jobs often pay less hourly than PT jobs, bc they come with sick days, paid days off, paid holidays and paid vacation days. For most nannies, it is not a profession it is a job. [ Reply | More ]

so you are one of those people who believe that the most expensive thing is always the best? my friends have had to fire 2 well paid professional nannies (and i mean well paid at salaries approaching 6 figures) - one turned out to be illiterate and the other kept demanding more money. commanding hourly rates that are higher than those of actual professionals (say teachers, small firm accountants, etc.) is not reasonable. that's fine, but likening her to an adult babysitter, IMO is belittling the extent of her duties/expertise. I used to babysit as a teenager, but taking care of a child all day is a totally diff't thing. And while the nanny is not replacing you while you are away, I would think you'd want someone who would watch your child with the same (or close to the same) degree of concern that you would have. (Obviously, she's not the parent, but she is a caregiver, and more of a caregiver than an occasional teenager sitting on the couch chowing on your food while the kid sleeps for a couple of hours until you get home.) That's all I mean. [ Reply | More ]

sure it does and this is true at any job. freelancers charge higher hourly rates than they would get working as a FT employee because no benefits and cover their own expenses. it's definitely the norm for domestic help - whether it be a nanny or a housekeeper. Years ago when my nanny started she ASKED for $15/hr PT or a salary that came out to $10/hr for FT (1 dc at the time). This was HER salary demand. [ Reply | More ]

You should contact the DOE -- Office of Gifted & Talented Programs now to see if your dc can test for a G&T program. UES has tons of good zoned schools and is a very family friendly area (lots of parks, museums, after school activities, weekend sports leagues etc.) If you like a traditional school, look at apartments in the 158 and 6 zones. If you like progressive, look for an apt. in 290. The 290 and 158 areas are a lot less expensive than the apartments zoned for ps 6. [ Reply | More ]

add 183 to the mix of good UES schools. 290 and 6 are a bit more overcrowded than 158 and 183. and the areas east of 2nd which are zoned for 290 and 158 are really a "deal" for manhattan apartments. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but 290 is REALLY overcrowded and there isn't a playground. I would do 6, then 158 on the UES depending on what apartment you find. (Not that you should limit yourself to the UES). [ Reply | More ]

-- Oh, and it's nice to be near the park, near families, TONS of kids stuff up there. But you might have an UWS/UES or commuting preference. Most of the city is child friendly now. The Village and Tribeca are as well, also near Gramercy Park there is a good public school. [ Reply | More ]

Depending on what neighborhoods you like and what you can afford, I think you'd be really happy moving into the PS87 zone on the UWS. It's just a great family-friendly neighborhood, 2 great parks (Central and Riverside), tons of playgrounds, museums, etc etc. And you can try the G & T testing if it's available and still be near several good programs if you opt to go that route instead of 87 in the end. This may be true on UES, with PS 6, etc, too, but I'm talking about what I know best. [ Reply | More ]

only options for flying to denver directly from NYC are united and frontier. United has hte usual delays but it's direct. i'm not really sure actually. it's just the two of us in our little house with our new baby right now and everything is so comfortable and easy. i don't want to say it's a high profile kind of job but in a way it is and we'll have to move, he'll travel more, etc. just a lot of change i guess. change can be scary even if it's good change. hang in there and see how it goes. if your dh is happy about it, be as supportive as you can even if you're nervous. [ Reply | More ]

I think you have to ask yourself why your DH "dreams" of a job that entails more travel that would take him away from his family. [ Reply | More ]

I think if it's his dream, I'm guessing it pays better, makes better use of his skills, advances him in his career & perhaps a number of those things will benefit his family. [ Reply | More ]

Big changes, even ones that are positive, can be hard & stressful. My mom told me that when my dad, post-GI, finished his degree and got a job at a local college she cried & cried. She was so comfortable with the life she had it freaked her out that they would have a different schedule, more money, etc. It worked out fine. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am so fed up with Verizon One Bill. "Switch to Verizon local and long distance and combined with your Wireless, your bill will be more convenient and less expensive." OMG--what a nightmare. This is a prelude to asking for a recommendation for good local and long distance service. I have to keep the Verizon wireless. I had MCI local/long distance before. Anyone love their landline and/or long distance service? TIA. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You're not going to want to hear this, but I love my Verizon land line service. There's just no beating the actual TELEPHONE COMPANY for telephone service. [ Reply | More ]

Not really answering your Q but I recently added international calls on to our Verizon local and long distance and the total price went down! Even if you don't need to make internaional calls you might save a few $ this way. [ Reply | More ]

I'm supposed to be paying approx. $140/mo for local, LD, and wireless. Every month it is over $200 (and we do not go over our 700 min. on cells). When I call, the landline cannot see the wireless bill. the wireless cannot see the landline bill. I have a 140 credit on wireless that landline cannot see. They're saying I owe $476! It's outrageous, frustrating and time-consuming. And it seems that I go through this EVERY month. One month they cut off my service after I had just paid my bill because there was no communication between the two companies (Verizon and Verizon Wireless). I'm getting angina just writing it down. Plus, I am recovering from a bilateral mastectomy and chemo and cannot deal with the stress. [ Reply | More ]

I have the Verizon "Freedom Plan" where I pay a flat $60/month for unlimited local and long distance. This includes all the extras like Caller ID, Three-Way Calling, Voicemail, etc. I have AT&T Wireless, $40/month. For the two bills combined, I have never paid more than $100 [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't. Might be scary for baby. And frustrating for you; if you want to nurse (or bottle feed) or change diaper, or leave, it can be difficult with crowds and such. You'll have lots of years when child will want to go! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] If Dh gets job that he's interviewing for tomorrow, we might move to Boston without me having a job first because I don't want to throw 11mo into just any daycare. Is this a hugely stupid move? We really miss Boston. Are renting now & likely will still rent for at least another year. I really want to find something PT because I feel I never see my DD. 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

thanks. i feel guilty because we would be leaving my parents again but they are 40min. - 1 hr. away & would be 2 hrs. away if we move. Mom hasn't been the regular babysitter she acted like she would be. DH threatens that it would be our last move for awhile because we moved closer to be near my family but are miserable with our day-to-day life now. Wkends or holidays w/ family are nice though.
