curious--I have 2.5 yr old twins and work at home pt in manhattan. My nanny works 40-45 hrs per week. How much do you think I pay her/she should be paid? I am with the kids for about 70% of the day. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i don't know about the pay but you pay her for the time she's there regardless of whether or not you're there, right? [ Reply | More ]

omg. Of course! She is amazing with my kids, and a great all around help about the house, as well as good company. [ Reply | More ]

That sounds a bit steep. We pay ours $25/hour. But she definitely should be paying overtime for those extra 5 hours a week. [ Reply | More ]

For a BABYSITTER, not a nanny. [ Reply | More ]

BS. unless you are talking a british governess, nannies are FT and experienced childcare providers, i.e. babysitters. [ Reply | More ]

For $15, they're adult babysitters. [ Reply | More ]

Experienced child care providers. They command more $$$ than the 16 year old down the street. [ Reply | More ]

then no wonder some of them suck. if they're not treated with respect or expected to be more than an adult version of a teen babysitter, of course, they'll be irresponsible with your child. I deplore this attitude. The person is caring for your child in your stead, treat them like more than a servant. [ Reply | More ]

i don't think that treating a nanny like a servant only comes down to hourly wage. my nanny knows that she can go elsewhere and make more $ and if she needed to do that i would understand, OTOH, she knows that we pay what we can afford and that we are considerate of her as a person and she values that. You are devaluing her and her profession if you pay her what teenage babysitters get paid. [ Reply | More ]

my teen sitter gets $10/hr. FT jobs often pay less hourly than PT jobs, bc they come with sick days, paid days off, paid holidays and paid vacation days. For most nannies, it is not a profession it is a job. [ Reply | More ]

Well, you get what you pay for. If all you want is an adult teenager, go for it. I see first-hand how these adult teenagers treat your kids. [ Reply | More ]

so you are one of those people who believe that the most expensive thing is always the best? my friends have had to fire 2 well paid professional nannies (and i mean well paid at salaries approaching 6 figures) - one turned out to be illiterate and the other kept demanding more money. commanding hourly rates that are higher than those of actual professionals (say teachers, small firm accountants, etc.) is not reasonable. So two bad examples and they're ALL worth as much as a 16-year-old? [ Reply | More ]

that's fine, but likening her to an adult babysitter, IMO is belittling the extent of her duties/expertise. I used to babysit as a teenager, but taking care of a child all day is a totally diff't thing. And while the nanny is not replacing you while you are away, I would think you'd want someone who would watch your child with the same (or close to the same) degree of concern that you would have. (Obviously, she's not the parent, but she is a caregiver, and more of a caregiver than an occasional teenager sitting on the couch chowing on your food while the kid sleeps for a couple of hours until you get home.) That's all I mean. [ Reply | More ]

sure, but my teen sitter does not work for me FT, not would she make $15/hour if she did. that's a salary of over $30K/year. [ Reply | More ]

So working the same job full-time means they get paid less? That makes no sense. [ Reply | More ]

sure it does and this is true at any job. freelancers charge higher hourly rates than they would get working as a FT employee because no benefits and cover their own expenses. it's definitely the norm for domestic help - whether it be a nanny or a housekeeper. Years ago when my nanny started she ASKED for $15/hr PT or a salary that came out to $10/hr for FT (1 dc at the time). This was HER salary demand. [ Reply | More ]

Just because one nanny is naive about salary negotiations doesn't mean you should fleece all the others. [ Reply | More ]

you pay your nanny $1,320/week? That's a salary of nearly $70K/year. What exactly do you get for that - I swear, experienced school teachers make 2/3 of that! [ Reply | More ]

I think $600-$700/week is probably the average for 2 kids not yet in school. [ Reply | More ]
