[ - ] i got an unecessary ultrasound every 3 weeks for the 1st 6 months of my (completely normal) pregnancy before switching OBs. My new doc says we can't know whether any harm was done. Now I'm hearing about theories that ultrasounds cause ear infections, the possibility of childhood cancer, all these effects seen on mice at high levels. I'm so angry that I let this happen. I'm about to deliver any day and am scared that my baby was hurt by this money grubbing doctor. 21 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm sorry you were given ultrasounds you didn't need, but your new OB is ridiculous by saying you can't know if any harm was done. Theories are not proof, and so many babies are given many ultrasounds (necessary ones) without any effect. [ Reply | More ]

money grubbing? sounds overly cautious maybe. I had lots of u/s for both my pregnancies (paid doc flat fee, so not about money) -- no problems with either of my dcs. I think (and I'm trying to say this gently) that you may be overworrying on this one. [ Reply | More ]

i wish he was overly cautious. there is some research suggesting problems (nothing proven), so a cautious doc would stay away when there's absolutely no reason for it. i noticed that this guy's bills to my insurance company were three times as high as my new OB's, and I also noticed a lot of fancy new looking ultrasound equipment in his office. Your new OB's reaction seems a little over the top. Most women who see a fertility doctor or who have high-risk pregnancies have ultrasounds every week from the time that they find out they are pregnant until about pretty far along in their first trimester. If you had about 6 or 7 ultrasounds during your pregnancy, I assure you that there are tons of people who have just as many. [ Reply | More ]

you don't want to see any affects at all from a procedure that's totally unnecessary. there's evidence of a link between ultrasounds and left-handedness. Nobody's saying left handedness is a problem, but where there's one neurological effect, there could be others. And again, all these ultrasounds were totally uncalled for. [ Reply | More ]

nobody is saying all left-handedness is caused by ultrasounds. but 2 large european studies found a connection between boys who received a lot of ultrasounds and left handedness. again, not a problem per se, but you gotta wonder what other, less beneign effects, there could be. the one caveat to those studies is that the kids weren't a random sample: they were receiving ultrasounds because they were high risk to begin with. Still....a good doctor uses caution and subscribes to the motto 'first do no harm.' [ Reply | More ]

I had twins and was a high risk pregancy for other health problems. I got an ultrasound 2xs a week. My boys are now 2 years old and have NEVER had an ear infection nor any other problems. I give credit for that for the fact that I breast fed (pumped actually),give them Juice Plus+, lots of healthy foods and because I only give them antibiotic free milk and meat. Don't worry too much although it is really hard not to. I believe ultrasounds are pretty safe. People that have breast cancer and don't want xrays often with only do ultrasound because it's safer. You just have to weigh the risks against the benefits. Good luck and think happy positive thoughts!!!! [ Reply | More ]

For math, highest score is 770 -- # correct is 39, % correct is 100%. 728 -- # correct is 38, % correct is 97%. 710 -- # correct is 37, % correct is 95%. Next score is 700, which is a 3. This adjustment has been made so that students are not required to earn a perfect raw score (33 out of 33) in order to achieve a level 4. If a perfect raw score were to be required to achieve a level 4 for any of the future Grades 3-8 English Language Arts Tests, a similar adjustment will be made. I'm sorry but I was correct. I just posted above about this. I'm also puzzled about the partial credit -- do you think you really can get scores other than what is on that spreadsheet? On a cruise I saw a baby who had to be 8-9 months old drinking chocolate milk out of her baby bottle. [ Reply | More ]

I hope for your sake, it wasn't chocolate pediasure or something that the kid needed because she's sick. Then what would you do with your snark? [ Reply | More ]

Perhaps the baby had constipation and the parents had put a little prune juice in her milk. That makes it look like chocolate milk. I've done it in the past, on the advice of our doctor I might add, and I've worried that people would think it was chocolate milk. Best not to assume. [ Reply | More ]

op: why oh please? Staring them out healthy is a good way to keep them eating healthy. I just think under 2 is a little young for everyday cookies, chips, pop, etc. Special occasion "junk" is different (cake, ice cream, special dessert, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure I do things that other people don't agree with. Not saying I'm perfect, far from it, but having food that is good for your toddler is important to me and it surprises me when people give their 20mo cheese puffs instead of just giving them cheese. (I question it here, not IRL, because I realize its a lifestyle thing not the end of the world) [ Reply | More ]

My 2 yo won't touch cheese unless it's hidden in ravioli. Some kids are picky eaters. I'm not saying I'd give cheese puffs as an alternative, but sometimes you wind up giving kids whatever they'll eat. [ Reply | More ]

this shocks me to I went to visit a friend a year ago and she gave her dauhgter (2.5 yrs.) fruit snacks for breakfast because "at least it's some fruit, she won't eat any real fruit" I was a little taken back as I don't think there is actual fruit in fruit snacks...YIKES! [ Reply | More ]

But this is what I mean...You don't "think" there's any fruit in fruit snacks. Did you check or are you too busy judging your friend? The fruit snacks we have are made from fruit juice concentrate which is--wait for it--FRUIT! Obviously, unprocessed, simple fruit is better, but you work with what you've got. [ Reply | More ]

I know that there is fruit concentrate but not real fruit...but how would their daughter even know that fruit snacks exist and age 2 of course she prefers treat to real fruit but she would eat the fruit I am sure if she was not introduced to candy [ Reply | More ]

my 1 yo DS is a complete food hound - I let him taste whatever I'm having - from fat free plain yogurt to chips - I think its important for children to be exposed to all things - its up to the parents to instill good eating habits - not fanatical "can't have this/that" attitude. [ Reply | More ]
