i got an unecessary ultrasound every 3 weeks for the 1st 6 months of my (completely normal) pregnancy before switching OBs. My new doc says we can't know whether any harm was done. Now I'm hearing about theories that ultrasounds cause ear infections, the possibility of childhood cancer, all these effects seen on mice at high levels. I'm so angry that I let this happen. I'm about to deliver any day and am scared that my baby was hurt by this money grubbing doctor. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I had them every month and dc's first and only ear infection occurred a month before her fifth birthday. I think your new OB is being alarmist. The evidence is not that clear at all. Try not to worry. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sorry you were given ultrasounds you didn't need, but your new OB is ridiculous by saying you can't know if any harm was done. Theories are not proof, and so many babies are given many ultrasounds (necessary ones) without any effect. [ Reply | More ]

relax. the new dr is just covering his own ass in case there is a problem, he can blame it on your old dr and the ultrasounds. Which were probably fine btw [ Reply | More ]

i am really low-intervention but there's nothing you can do now. 99.9999% your baby will be perfect. It's all theory at this point. GL! [ Reply | More ]

I had ultrasounds every month from 16 weeks till I delivered. Dc has had 2 ear infections in his life and is 7yo now. [ Reply | More ]

money grubbing? sounds overly cautious maybe. I had lots of u/s for both my pregnancies (paid doc flat fee, so not about money) -- no problems with either of my dcs. I think (and I'm trying to say this gently) that you may be overworrying on this one. [ Reply | More ]

i wish he was overly cautious. there is some research suggesting problems (nothing proven), so a cautious doc would stay away when there's absolutely no reason for it. i noticed that this guy's bills to my insurance company were three times as high as my new OB's, and I also noticed a lot of fancy new looking ultrasound equipment in his office. Your new OB's reaction seems a little over the top. Most women who see a fertility doctor or who have high-risk pregnancies have ultrasounds every week from the time that they find out they are pregnant until about pretty far along in their first trimester. If you had about 6 or 7 ultrasounds during your pregnancy, I assure you that there are tons of people who have just as many. [ Reply | More ]

OMG - EAR INFECTIONS? The horrors! I'm sorry, but a few ultrasounds are not going to adversely affect your child. Both of your OBs sound awful though. [ Reply | More ]

I don't understand from her post what is so awful about her original OB. This is standard practice in many OB's offices. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I think an ultrasound every week for a normal pg is a little excessive (every 5-6 maybe) but the alarmist one is really bad [ Reply | More ]

you don't want to see any affects at all from a procedure that's totally unnecessary. there's evidence of a link between ultrasounds and left-handedness. Nobody's saying left handedness is a problem, but where there's one neurological effect, there could be others. And again, all these ultrasounds were totally uncalled for. [ Reply | More ]

left-handedness is not a neurological problem. You alarmist parents are all crazy [ Reply | More ]

it's not a problem but it's an effect that's related to the brain. the point is you don't want to see any changes at all associated with an unnecessary medical procedure. that's why medical authorities urge prudence in the use of prenatal ultrasounds. [ Reply | More ]

np: And if you knew this and allowed the ultrasounds anyway, I guess you're a bad mommy :) [ Reply | More ]

I know 4 people who are lefthanded who were born well before they started using ultrasounds. I really doubt there's much of a connection [ Reply | More ]

nobody is saying all left-handedness is caused by ultrasounds. but 2 large european studies found a connection between boys who received a lot of ultrasounds and left handedness. again, not a problem per se, but you gotta wonder what other, less beneign effects, there could be. the one caveat to those studies is that the kids weren't a random sample: they were receiving ultrasounds because they were high risk to begin with. Still....a good doctor uses caution and subscribes to the motto 'first do no harm.' [ Reply | More ]

I had twins and was a high risk pregancy for other health problems. I got an ultrasound 2xs a week. My boys are now 2 years old and have NEVER had an ear infection nor any other problems. I give credit for that for the fact that I breast fed (pumped actually),give them Juice Plus+, lots of healthy foods and because I only give them antibiotic free milk and meat. Don't worry too much although it is really hard not to. I believe ultrasounds are pretty safe. People that have breast cancer and don't want xrays often with only do ultrasound because it's safer. You just have to weigh the risks against the benefits. Good luck and think happy positive thoughts!!!! [ Reply | More ]

I think that's different. Ultrasounds were warranted in your case. Here we're talking about a completely normal, low-risk pregnancy where there was simply no need to do an ultrasound at every checkup....except to drive up the bill. [ Reply | More ]
