I think moms who have their first hide in the house for those first few months, especially during the winter. I think when it's your second or third, you do what you have to do. Millions of moms across the United States are in your position. Just don't let the other kids touch your baby. And, to be honest, what you need to worry about more is what germs the other kids are bringing home from school. Make sure they are washing their hands, etc. when they come home. [ Reply | More ]

Now MIL is calling me in a panic because he is still in pain (just got on meds this am) and is constipated... I have Crohn's so I know how it is, and it isn't fun, but it will pass and in the grand scheme of things it is not a big deal. Why does she make everything such a catastrophe? Not calling DH because he's swamped w/ work and in a bad mood, now wondering if we're actually going to be able to go away this weekend.... 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

So. My dad just died of liver cancer 2mos ago after being dx 10 mos before. My mom, also anxious, became OBSESSED with his care. That's all she could talk about or think about. It was annoying because we all deal with this sort of thing differently, but thats what she had to do for herself. And in reality, being hyper aware of all these issues and changes is really important. As it turns out, the last time he was having complications - constipation, heartburn, pain - we all thought it was just continued issues around the pain meds and diet. But no, his whole GI system was shutting down due to the infiltration of the cancer. Not to say that's what is happening to your FIL, but if I knew his last week wasn't a passing complication but instead the end of his life, I would have been there more for him. You just never know with cancer even though you have to hope for the best. [ Reply | More ]

You should look to see if there are volunteer opportunities at the school that might not be through the PTA. Our school asks for parent volunteers to help in the art room where they often don't have student teachers. I didn't help when my DC's class had art b/c of schedules, and I enjoyed the experience. You may also consider volunteering to be a class parent. For me this was a good way to get to know DC's teachers a little better as well as other parents in the class. [ Reply | More ]

Dcs both need math enrichment and tend to forget a lot by the time school starts again in the fall. Older dc going to competitive middle school, and is likely to get slammed in math if she does not do some light enrichment over the summer. Also, needed something for them to do after camp, and 1hour 2x/week is not bad, especially since they enjoy it anyway since it's "computer time". No worse than doing workbooks, which I never had the time to sit there and grade anyway. [ Reply | More ]

Both in public schools with great reputations. Older dc graduated from much-coveted D2 G&T, but 5th grade teacher was not great. Older dc had a great time in class this year, but coasted through the year, particularly in math. Younger dc likes doing workbooks anyway, and also finds school very easy and eager to learn new stuff, so I figured it won't hurt her since older dc needs to go anyway. [ Reply | More ]

She felt he was right on the cusp of a lot of growth & it would be good to take advantage of that. He doesn't work well with me if I try to do reading/writing activities with him. So I just read to him a lot and she does the more intensive stuff with him. We're actually pretty laid back parents, but since she offered & he works so well with her we went ahead with it. Public, but we're in CA. We do pay her. She does this for only a few families each summer. We feel very fortunate--she has been a very special teacher for DS. He's made a lot of breakthroughs with her. So to be able to extend that experience is fantastic. [ Reply | More ]

for free? That would be weird to me if a K teacher offered to "help" for money. [ Reply | More ]

I got a tutor for my preschooler to help with handwriting. It was clear DC couldn't decide if he was left or right handed (both run in our family), and as a result wasn't comfortable using either. The preschool wasn't doing anything about it, and I didn't want him to go to kindergarten without being able to write his name! Long story short, we got a great tutor (a teacher at our zoned public school) and DC now loves to draw and write! [ Reply | More ]

Um, it would have been pretty hard to get into private school with a kid who can't write his own name. I wouldn't have had to do it if he had a good teacher at his preschool who would work with him. And I was hitting a stone wall when I tried to work with him at home. As it turns out, he's left handed (and I'm not) so I had no idea how to help him. [ Reply | More ]

np, its not a joke. There is NO WAY a child who cannot write name will get into private school. It DOESN'T MATTER that it is a developmental thing and is absolutely meaningless in the long run (how many adults do you know who cannot write?), its something required for the insane private school admissions process and you cannot get around it if you want to play. That is why people have their dc tutored in preschool as above poster already stated. [ Reply | More ]

That kind of bears the question: why would you do such a thing to your child then? So she gets into a private school? F*ck those schools if that is really the case. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, I don't get it. Don't the privates know that it is just a developmental issue. Why would they care? [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like he needs OT, not a tutor. [ Reply | More ]

You'd get a first grader tutored in math if your school had progressive math like Everyday Math and your child was not learning basic math facts or operations. In my school, lots of parents have their second graders tutored in math or goign to Kumon for this reason. [ Reply | More ]

if you think you'll deliver this weekend, then how are you spending time just the 2 of you? if you really think you'll deliver, then the whole thing is moot anyway. why do you think you'll deliver? [ Reply | More ]

(A) it's really impossible to tell. I know someone who was at their OB in the am, and they said no signs of anything opening or softening and she delivered that night. [ Reply | More ]

and i should mention that one of the reasons he wants the extra money is because his parents can't afford to fly here (from southern u.s.) when the baby arrives, so we'll have to pay for it. i think i resent that. [ Reply | More ]

Of course your DH should work and you should relax about paying for the airline tix. What a blessing you can afford to do this and what great parents they are to raise such a wonderful man. [ Reply | More ]

All banks have correspondent relationships with other banks globally through larger banks here in the US or directly ie Citibank. Ask your bank about a funds transfer. [ Reply | More ]

Our doormen are not alloud to do side jobs. We winded up hiring ben hur. Flat rate was OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive. They came in 3X higher that the 4 other quotes I got. And the guy was ticked that I wasn't going with them. What a jerk. [ Reply | More ]
