Have a DD going to K in the fall. Friends with older kids have scared me with stories of PTA drama and terrible relationships with teachers. I want to be a very involved, very positive mom in her school, but I have no idea how to do that. One friend of mine said the administration treated her like "nutty mom" because she called when her K son was getting bullied. Are any parents respected schools? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

what is your problem? Your child isn't even in school yet and you are ranting about the possibility of being disprespected? What is the matter with you? Believe NONE of what you hear and half of what you see, and live your life as it comes. Why go looking for problems. BTW, your child is going to K, you aren't. [ Reply | More ]

are you on your period or something? why so nasty? I just get the sense there might be some ideas on how to contribute positively without stepping on toes. [ Reply | More ]

you can't figure out how to send your dd off to k and join the pta without being a pita? Are you for real? [ Reply | More ]

np. I get the sense you're really here to vent your anxiety and look for headpats rather than get real advice. The OR gave you excellent advice, even if it seemed harsh to you. Be skeptical of what you hear from other parents, don't let it freak you out, and wait and see what happens before you go looking for trouble that may not come to pass. [ Reply | More ]

and the obvious easy answer as to how to get involved is PTA. or be a class parent. OP doesn't haev to reinvent the wheel. [ Reply | More ]

i'm not sure what you mean by headpats, but if pta moms are as mean as some of the responders here maybe I won't get so involved. [ Reply | More ]

You can start by being positive and looking forward to it instead of looking for problems. [ Reply | More ]

is your question, are any parents respected? of course. but some schools are more welcoming of parents than others. The PTA will almost alwasy welcome more hands, andwill have ideas about waht you can do that is welcome/needed. [ Reply | More ]

You should look to see if there are volunteer opportunities at the school that might not be through the PTA. Our school asks for parent volunteers to help in the art room where they often don't have student teachers. I didn't help when my DC's class had art b/c of schedules, and I enjoyed the experience. You may also consider volunteering to be a class parent. For me this was a good way to get to know DC's teachers a little better as well as other parents in the class. [ Reply | More ]

when my dc started school, I took it slow at first-very low key to get a lay of the land. then I got more involved later on. it isn't my whole life, but I am glad to help and by doing it this way, I was able to get to know different people and made some nice friends too [ Reply | More ]
