I'm having issues with my 5 and 2.5yo not paying attention to me. They are too engrossed in TV or a book and I have to ask them to do something (put on your shoes, get your backpack, etc) like 4 or 5 times until I lose my temper. I really want to change everyone's behavior (mine included, of course--I'm yelling waaaay too much these days.) We have a 5mo baby as well, which obviously counts for a lot of the stress and bad behavior, but what really sticks in my craw is the ignoring. Any advice? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I would give them a 5 min warning that the tv will be going off and they will need to get ready to leave. then shut the tv off in 5 mins and tell them what to do, one thing at a time. [ Reply | More ]

that's great-- I a little future scheduling and planning would do us all good. But even when they're just playing or reading, I still have to request things a million times--any advice on that? [ Reply | More ]

np: I took a parenting class that instructed us to forecast the next step. So give them a 5 minute warning (or use an egg timer) that lets them know you will be expecting them to do the next activity. It works. [ Reply | More ]

buy a timer. there is one that goes from green to yellow to red. "5 minutes then put your shoes on" but for the tv, i just turn it off [ Reply | More ]

np: I like this idea (I'm having similar issues to OP) -- where can I buy one like that? [ Reply | More ]

thanks guys (op). the timer should work for my 5yo, but my 2.5yo is really persnickity these days. Am I expecting too much of him to get his shoes when it's time to leave? I try and have him do little tasks for himself (get your shoes, pick up your beach towel, get a book for the car) to try and get him to take on some responsibility but also to lighten my load a bit. Am I expecting too much from a 2.5yo boy (who's been usurped from the baby position?) [ Reply | More ]

sometiems kids genuinely don't hear you. if my son is reading, i pretty much have to physically get in his face and make sure i have eye contact or else he won't hear me. [ Reply | More ]
