Define tutoring? DC has dysgraphia and I work w/ her a little each day. But it's more like OT than what I think of as tutoring. [ Reply | More ]

Are you asking about remedial or "enrichment" [ Reply | More ]

I'm asking about both. It seems to me like a lot of people in DS's preschool are hiring tutors. I don't know why and am not comfortable askin. I was wondering why people would tutor such young children. [ Reply | More ]

you know the answer. People hire tutors for preschool children as test prep for the admissions tests and onsites. If you are looking for a names - you won't get them here. You won't get them from contemporaries - you will need to find a good friend or coworker with older children who will tell you. [ Reply | More ]

That's the way to win friends, start drilling the nannys on what the parents do to "enrich" their DCs. [ Reply | More ]

np. This is what I was thinking. I can think of half a dozen dc in my dc's grade being tutored, but none of the parents have ever mentioned it to me. I always hear this stuff through the nannies/sitters or occasionally from the dc. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not sure. I think a lot of these parents are determined for their dc to excel and be at the top of the class in all that they do. [ Reply | More ]

but they won't be - when the tutors stop - they will have no work ethic, no confidence - they will be lost and fail. It's a really bad idea. I don't undestand why parents are so clueless about this. Turn your child off to learning for fun, make them feel stupid (because they think they are the ONLY ones who need a tutor and everyone else is smarter. [ Reply | More ]

For some dc the tutoring never stops. And I'm not sure the dc think they're the only ones. At least when they're younger they still talk about it openly, which is why I know about it in a couple of cases. [ Reply | More ]

I was a child that wanted to be tops in most everything I did - that comes from within, not without. And when you tinker with who your children are - you are playing with fire. [ Reply | More ]

Well, yes and no. There's nothing wrong with trying to teach good habits to a dc who doesn't come by those behaviors naturally. I agree there's a limit to how much you can push a dc before it becomes harmful, but that limit is different for different dc. [ Reply | More ]

being the top of the heap in everything you attempt is not a "good habit". You can't take a child who is not competitive and make them want to be the best in everything. [ Reply | More ]

I never said you could. But you can teach dc good habits than enable them to excel if they have that potential. And being naturally competitive isn't enough on its own, either. [ Reply | More ]

^ I guess technically they're second graders now. Still. It seems excessive to me. A friend from college is now working as a reading specialist and his favorite time of the year is summer because he make a great living while staying in the Hamptons, tutoring all the dc on vacation and going to the beach. Dcs both need math enrichment and tend to forget a lot by the time school starts again in the fall. Older dc going to competitive middle school, and is likely to get slammed in math if she does not do some light enrichment over the summer. Also, needed something for them to do after camp, and 1hour 2x/week is not bad, especially since they enjoy it anyway since it's "computer time". No worse than doing workbooks, which I never had the time to sit there and grade anyway. [ Reply | More ]

Both in public schools with great reputations. Older dc graduated from much-coveted D2 G&T, but 5th grade teacher was not great. Older dc had a great time in class this year, but coasted through the year, particularly in math. Younger dc likes doing workbooks anyway, and also finds school very easy and eager to learn new stuff, so I figured it won't hurt her since older dc needs to go anyway. [ Reply | More ]

She's working with him on reading & writing. He is at grade level but a little behind where some of the kids in the class are (many entered reading and he did not). She felt he was right on the cusp of a lot of growth & it would be good to take advantage of that. He doesn't work well with me if I try to do reading/writing activities with him. So I just read to him a lot and she does the more intensive stuff with him. We're actually pretty laid back parents, but since she offered & he works so well with her we went ahead with it. Public, but we're in CA. We do pay her. She does this for only a few families each summer. We feel very fortunate--she has been a very special teacher for DS. He's made a lot of breakthroughs with her. So to be able to extend that experience is fantastic. [ Reply | More ]

I got a tutor for my preschooler to help with handwriting. It was clear DC couldn't decide if he was left or right handed (both run in our family), and as a result wasn't comfortable using either. The preschool wasn't doing anything about it, and I didn't want him to go to kindergarten without being able to write his name! Long story short, we got a great tutor (a teacher at our zoned public school) and DC now loves to draw and write! [ Reply | More ]

Um, it would have been pretty hard to get into private school with a kid who can't write his own name. I wouldn't have had to do it if he had a good teacher at his preschool who would work with him. And I was hitting a stone wall when I tried to work with him at home. As it turns out, he's left handed (and I'm not) so I had no idea how to help him. [ Reply | More ]

np, its not a joke. There is NO WAY a child who cannot write name will get into private school. It DOESN'T MATTER that it is a developmental thing and is absolutely meaningless in the long run (how many adults do you know who cannot write?), its something required for the insane private school admissions process and you cannot get around it if you want to play. That is why people have their dc tutored in preschool as above poster already stated. [ Reply | More ]

That kind of bears the question: why would you do such a thing to your child then? So she gets into a private school? F*ck those schools if that is really the case. [ Reply | More ]

You'd get a first grader tutored in math if your school had progressive math like Everyday Math and your child was not learning basic math facts or operations. In my school, lots of parents have their second graders tutored in math or goign to Kumon for this reason. [ Reply | More ]
