[ - ] am so sad. 5 yo dd started camp this wk and seemed to really like it. tonight she says she doesn't want to go back. she said it makes her nervous when bus gets there and they're waiting to find their groups. otherwise, she says she has friends in her group, she likes the activities, etc. it sounded like it was just the initial getting oriented and grouped. i sent her to camp this summer with a friend (who's in a different group but on same bus) b/c i want her to get used to bus since she'll be bused to K in the fall. any suggestions? i told her how i was nervous when i was young but then everything turned out okay. told her i understood. we talked about all the stuff she likes at camp, about how her group would miss her if she didn't go, etc. i'm so sad. please btdts (or anyone!) advice!! 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

it doesn't seem that tragic to be so sad about this. your dd is adjusting-she will be fine. i would give her some suggestions on what to do if she feels nervous or lost -like getting to know other counselors who can point her in the right direction. it can also take time to find friends in own group. is there a way to talk with counselor and explain what your dd said to you about not returning? Camp mom here (am an assistant director at a day camp): the start of camp is an adjustment -- but it sounds as though DD is very much okay once the day gets going. Have you spoken to the Head Counselor (or whoever)? He/she may be able to brainstorm an AM routine to help DD feel comfortable. Can the bus counselor bring her inside/to her group? I'd call camp, let them know what is going on, and see what they suggest. [ Reply | More ]

At 3, my dd knew very few and had no interest in learning. At 3.5, she knows them all (upper and lower), can spell simple words and loves to play spelling games. It's all about when they become interested. And honestly, I'm more concerned with her ability to play with kids than how many words she knows. ime, a good school will do a balance. kids learn to deal with one another, learn to solve problems, make friends and also learn about structure, learn fine motor skills, colors, letters, etc. pushing a dc at this age isn't the right thing to do but gentle encouraging is good-fine line though that can easily get crossed with neurotic families/psd. dc wants more plot - picture books bore. It IS tricky. That's why I asked for suggestions. Nesbitt is classic, classic children's fictionand inspried both JK Rowling and Eager, who is now "classic" (These are to read to him). Start with Half Magic for Eager. Good ops in Eager for him to read [ Reply | More ]

np: Half-Magic is one of DS's favorites (started reading it to him when he was 4). Not sure of the authors, but also loves My Father's Dragon, Mary Poppins, The Enormous Egg, and The Phantom Tollbooth. [ Reply | More ]

Part of learning to read involves developing fluency, so over the summer you can also have your child read books that come easy to him. Make sure your child understands that you will keep reading to him and that your reading to him is not tied to him learning to read. Learning to read can be a very arduous process (it was for my child) and does not give the enjoyment that comes from being read good books. Have you tried all the Arnold Lobel books? Mouse Tail and Mouse Soup are lovely. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Transitional reading is a hard time. I agree that the books are often not riveting. You also might look at some James Marshall books: Three by the Sea is an earlier reader. By the way, reading levels are fuzzy--to say a particular level doesn't really give enough information, as publishers differ in how they level books. [ Reply | More ]

Who knows, but people in Manhattan were buying prep books. Still, the types to prep and to know about it and have resources to do it - will largely be the middle and upper middle class. [ Reply | More ]

Statistically, most babies are born in Sept. I found this out Sept. 19 when women were stacked up like cordwood in the halls of Lenox Hill waiting to give birth! [ Reply | More ]

a load...I find a lot of holistic poeple have these myths that aren't backed up by anything. I'm not saying their holistic methods don't work, because I think accupunture and holistic medicine is great, but some off the things that they say make no sense. A woman's body is made to be fertile once a month...winter, spring, summer and fall! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] renter question. we were tenants who just moved out of a house. the landlady lives in another state. she had a friend come to do a walkthrough in order to give us our deposit. there was some stuff in the garage of ours, which we told him we would haul out that day. he told the landlady that he didn't want to come back again to see that it was gone. the landlady now says we can't get our deposit until 7/20 when she is in town and can see that it is gone. do we have any legal recourse here for getting our deposit back sooner? we signed a lease w/ the deposit info in there. (i don't see why she can't just check w/ the new tenant that the stuff is gone either) TIA 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Like suing? Yeah, hire a lawyer and try to sue. Since you did not have yur belongings out of the place by the conclusion of your lease you will owe an additional months rent. [ Reply | More ]
