dc ended the year reading "I" books. What books would you recommend we get for summer reading (dc reading to us, not the other way around). Thanks! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

what types are I books. never heard what level my dc was reading. he reads much higher level books at home than the books he would bring home for homework. [ Reply | More ]

At our school, the children start on books that are "A" books, as they master them, they move to "B" books and so on. "I" is where you usually end up around the end of first grade. It's harder than a Biscuit Book - easier than a Magic Treehouse Book. Hard to describe. Just hoping some moms could give suggestions. [ Reply | More ]

the st lukes school website has a pretty extensive list of reading and what grades-I think they do it in grade ranges so you get a sense for the dc's. the books are also pretty good too-and from authors I hadn't know. [ Reply | More ]

Look for the printed reading lists at the public library. Ignore the poster above--many of the assistants hired by libraries know nothing about books. You're lucky if you find a good children's librarian. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, I know and am ignoring. We used the main childrens library - and the librians there were excellent - but they (and most of the books) have been packed and shipped elsewhere, so we are at a loss. Was hoping there were other moms who had suggestions - I try the daytime crowd tomorrow. Thanks again. [ Reply | More ]

Do a search for "BookMom" or "Book Mom"--you'll probably find some good suggestions there. She's the only one who knows what she's talking about and can give specifics. [ Reply | More ]

If Biscuit is too easy but MTH is too hard, how about books in the middle like Dr Seuss or Angelina Ballerina? I think chapter books might be too hard for dc. Stick to picture books with more difficult words. It can be tricky if dc wants more plot in the story. [ Reply | More ]

dc wants more plot - picture books bore. It IS tricky. That's why I asked for suggestions. Captain Underpants isn't cutting it, someone suggested Black Lagoon Series, but no one has them (weirdest thing), Suess is too easy - we did all of them. Henry and Mudge so/so. Its not as easy as people seem to think it is. I'm kind of surprised. I thought UB would be full of moms who stocked up on summer reading books. But it doesn't seem like it. [ Reply | More ]

np. Have you tried any of Cynthia Rylant's other early reader series? Poppleton or Mr. Putter & Tabby. I seem to recall Poppleton being a little easier than Henry & Mudge. Not sure about Mr. Putter & Tabby. [ Reply | More ]

Nesbitt is classic, classic children's fictionand inspried both JK Rowling and Eager, who is now "classic" (These are to read to him). Start with Half Magic for Eager. Good ops in Eager for him to read [ Reply | More ]

Part of learning to read involves developing fluency, so over the summer you can also have your child read books that come easy to him. Make sure your child understands that you will keep reading to him and that your reading to him is not tied to him learning to read. Learning to read can be a very arduous process (it was for my child) and does not give the enjoyment that comes from being read good books. Have you tried all the Arnold Lobel books? Mouse Tail and Mouse Soup are lovely. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ Transitional reading is a hard time. I agree that the books are often not riveting. You also might look at some James Marshall books: Three by the Sea is an earlier reader. By the way, reading levels are fuzzy--to say a particular level doesn't really give enough information, as publishers differ in how they level books. [ Reply | More ]
