Regarding the post about the 46 yr old TTC: If you are 46, did you stop using birth control? I'd really like to stop and just take a chance -- I mean, all of you insisting that 46 yr olds shouldn't have dbs must mean that we aren't "supposed" to get pg so what's the risk? I posted this q. before and got all sorts of replies telling me stories of late dbs that weren't planned when moms stopped using bc. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm 39. Needed a lot of help (IVF) to have DB #1 at 37. Didn't use birth control after she was born because it didn't seem necessary. Wound up pregnant with #2 right away. There's no risk to trying and seeing what happens. [ Reply | More ]

Pretty much same scenario with me. #1 at 37.5 took 6 mos and we had started working with RE. #2 unplanned pregnancy. Kids are 18mos apart. [ Reply | More ]

Ha. I'm similar too. #1 at 39 took 2 years (though we never checked hormone levels, etc.) #2 is 18 months younger. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't use birth control at 46, but I was ok with having another child -- good thing, b/c dc#2 was born shortly after I turned 47. I'm 48 now and still don't use birth control -- I assume lightening won't strike twice, but even if it did, I'd be ok with it. [ Reply | More ]

If you're ok w/ an "opps baby", then go ahead and go off. Statistically, the chances are one your side that you won't get pregnant. [ Reply | More ]

and if you do the chances aren't good that you'll have a healthy baby [ Reply | More ]

np: Actually the chances are still very good that she would have a healthy baby - you'd play the lottery if you'd win 19 times out of 20. [ Reply | More ]

If I remember right, the chances for Down's are not that slim. The risk of having a child with Down [ Reply | More ]

^^^ from what I remember from the info they gave at my amnio, the risk of having a child with Down's starts increasing significantly after 40. I don't have the info any more though, but easily enough researched. [ Reply | More ]

But instead of researching it, you are telling people that "chances aren't good" to have a healthy baby. Sigh. [ Reply | More ]

there are things other than Downs that greatly increase after age 40, especially by age 45 [ Reply | More ]

I remember that it is higher than what other people are saying and suggesting that she research it herself. If you have ever been in a position to think that your child will be different or have a disability, you might not be so quick to snap at me. I wasn't suggesting that she not do it, just that she look into it more than anecdotal advice on UB before she makes her decision. [ Reply | More ]

You suggested no such thing, you just made a nasty comment. And I do have a SN child, conceived when I was 30. [ Reply | More ]

The person you snarked at was not the person who made the comment that you were offended by. Just because someone was nasty does not entitle you to be nasty to someone else. [ Reply | More ]

For what? For saying that people shouldn't tell people they will have damaged babies without knowing the real statistics? In several interactions, you did not say you were a new person. [ Reply | More ]

Well, we don't use any bc, but I'm infertile. There's like a one in a gazillion chance that we would get pg (I'm almost 41, for the record). But if we did I would probably be positive about it. We adopted our two kids and I feel like our children really found us, so if someone else showed up I'd figure it was meant to be. [ Reply | More ]

np: Love your attitude - "if someone else showed up"!! I feel the same way, that we ended up with the exact children we were meant to have. [ Reply | More ]

When we were going through I/F and then waiting to adopt, it was hard to believe that. But once my oldest came along it was really clear why we'd been waiting. Ditto with #2. [ Reply | More ]
