Any public school moms surprised at dc's ELA/Math scores? What did you think of your school's performance? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Our school did better than I expected (199)...but the test was also easier than previous years [ Reply | More ]

I just looked at your scores -- they are amazing. Does your school do much test prep? What's most impressive is that % of 4s -- because the test was so easy, you basically had to get a perfect score to get a 4 in some grades. Alot of kids in our school missed 2, probably careless errors, and ended up with 3's. [ Reply | More ]

"4" was quite wide (703-770 for Math, 720-780 for ELA)..so I don't think you're right (about missing just 2 questions and get a "3"). and..yes 199 does a LOT of test prep (as all good publics, I think) [ Reply | More ]

If you look at the sheet we got, missing one question on ELA is a 720, and 2 questions is below 700 (at least in 3rd grade). I think you could miss more on math. What does "alot" mean? Is it just the few weeks before the test (say starting in Dec. for the ELA), or from beginning of year? [ Reply | More ]

It doesn't say that anywhere. If you were correct the scores would jump from 720 (1 error) to 780 (2 errors). You're making shit up. If you look at the SPI it's out of 100. My DC got high 90s on all of them and got 720 [ Reply | More ]

Nope, you are wrong -- our school gave us the sheet. One error brings the score down from 780 to 720, and 2 errors to 6 hundred something in ELA. In math, you can miss 3 I think, and still get a 4. This isn't on the state's sheet, but it's a separate page our school gave us. I am 100% positive. [ Reply | More ]

^^^so your dc only missed one question on the ELA. I dare you to call your school and check on this (at least for 3rd grade). I'm going to watch this post so you can come back and apologize to me because I'm correct. [ Reply | More ]

So according to you no kids scored, 730, 740, 750, 760, or 770?? and yet the ELA cut-off for G&T is 730 [ Reply | More ]

No kid in 3rd grade scored a 730, 740, 750, 760, 770 in the ELA. Other grades scores may be different. The ELA cut off in 3rd grade for G & T is not 730, it's a 4 (but a 4 in BOTH Math and ELA. Your 720 kid would have qualified. Check the link on insideschools on G&T for older kids -- from the blog. Stupid DOE has a June 26 application cut off when our school didn't even send the scores home until June 26. Typical. [ Reply | More ]

^^^Okay, I have to eat my words here. The G&T cut off does say 730, although that makes no sense. Parents were given a "2008 3rd Grade ELA Scores Conversion Table". 780 -- # correct is 33, % correct is 100%. 720 -- # correct is 32, % correct is 97%. 697 (a 3) -- # correct is 31, % correct is 94%. For math, highest score is 770 -- # correct is 39, % correct is 100%. 728 -- # correct is 38, % correct is 97%. 710 -- # correct is 37, % correct is 95%. Next score is 700, which is a 3. You make no sense. The "official" cut-off for "4" in Math. was 703. According to you Nobody got 703. As you probably saw "4" was 703-770, NOT 710-770. I think some Questions were not just multiple choice, so some DCs got partial credit. Maybe that's it. Although the ELA G&T cut-off of 730 still makes no sense (if we follow your logic) [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, UB keeps posting this before I am through. Look at the 3-8 conversion charts for the scaled scores. I'm sorry, but I think the person who posted that their 3rd grader got 705 and 706 is lying. And I hope you all apologize to me. You have to look at the excel spreadsheet. I know it's confusing, but ask your school if you don't believe me. [ Reply | More ]

And I quote from the page: *For the 2008 Grade 3 English Language Arts Test only, a scale score of 720 (raw score of 32 out of 33) is being accepted as a level 4. This adjustment has been made so that students are not required to earn a perfect raw score (33 out of 33) in order to achieve a level 4. If a perfect raw score were to be required to achieve a level 4 for any of the future Grades 3-8 English Language Arts Tests, a similar adjustment will be made. I'm sorry but I was correct. It's just annoying to be disbelieved when I was just trying to point out how hard it was to get a 4 in 3rd grade ELA [ Reply | More ]

I guess some DCs got partial credit for some answers then (I believe in 3 Questions the DC had to write something). You were overall right though. So this G&T 730 cut-off is weird then [ Reply | More ]

You are welcome. I think that cut off is probably a typo or something -- but the DOE is so ridiculous. They held up giving out the scores, which meant 99% of parents missed the deadline to apply anyway. DC is okay at gen ed in our zoned school, but I'd be upset if we had wanted G & T and didn't know dc qualified. [ Reply | More ]

Anyway, I think I proved my point that your kid who got a 720 only missed one question. Do you still disagree? Maybe it's possible that kids get some partial credit and scores in between, but it certainly isn't acknowledged on the state's website. [ Reply | More ]

I just posted above about this. I'm also puzzled about the partial credit -- do you think you really can get scores other than what is on that spreadsheet? I assumed not, but if someone really did get an in-between score, I guess it means he/she got 31.5 correct or some such number. Anyway, my overall point was how hard it was for any dc to get a 4 on the ELA this year -- it's pretty easy to be very smart but miss more than 1 question (like forgetting to correct a lower case letter in the editing section). ^^^also, our school handed out a conversion table (slightly different form than on website) that showed how the score related to how many were missed. That would have been very confusing to me as a parent if one of my dc's scores was in-between. But both scores were on there -- were both of your dcs? Do you actually know anyone who got an in-between score? I don't know anyone else's score except dc's since no one talks about them at all in our school, so you probably don't either. I was shocked by how low my dc's scores were (for 3rd grade). In every practice test at home she never missed a question. she reads on something like a 6th grade level and her teacher told us all year she was one of the top math students. We didn't get her scores until after school let out, so I couldn't ask anyone about them. I don't know if she froze on the tests, did something wrong mechanically or what. The scores definitely did not jive with the daughter we know and the reports we've gotten from her teacher all year. [ Reply | More ]

Are you sure dc really got a "low" score or was it just a 3, but very high. In 3rd grade, if you missed more than one ELA question, you are at a 3, but still a very high score. Lots of excellent readers got a high 3 in ELA -- easy to make a careless mistake. [ Reply | More ]

to teach her what? how to take the tests? her ability and skill level are already above grade level. At home she aces the test, so I can't imagine what a tutor could do. And I am exactly worried about next year's tests. [ Reply | More ]
