[ - ] Anyone on with a dc in G&T middle school? Trying to get an idea of what "a ton of homework" means. My dc does a lot of after school and thinking I shouldn't book anything his first year entering G&T. Hoping it is not as bad as it sounds on UB? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Depends on the school. For example, Delta kids have a lot more HW than Anderson kids. The schools have different HW policies. [ Reply | More ]

np: Anderson is near impossible to get in, they have like 10 spots for all of the city, so if you live in D3 and dc has great 4th grade scores odds are s/he will end up at Delta. Which is known for 2-3 hours of homework per night. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's probably very child dependent. I have a couple friends whose kids go and they definitely got a bit of a shock the first year there, and I was told at least two hours most nights. I am sure some kids can do it faster and some will take longer, so no doubt some can be done in 1 1/2 hour or even sooner. [ Reply | More ]

yes, but how is this stuff going to get to town? Do you really think that people are going to bike it in? In a normal urban/suburban area, the costs are worth the benefits, but I doubt in a rural one they will make sense for anything besides maybe glass and metal. Plastic and paper have little usefulness in recycling, and most can only be recycled a couple times. [ Reply | More ]

I suppose that is where research would play a role. Best not to shoot something down that has a positive goal before knowing the scenario completely. Seems to me like recycling a couple of times is preferable to waste. [ Reply | More ]

not necessarily when recycling plastic is pretty toxic too. I'm all for environmental responsibility, and I have cut down our waste hugely (one trash can every two weeks). But if she wants to start a save the earth campaign, there are far more effective ways to do it than this. This is just so she can feel better than the rural people that don't know any better. It is not going to make a big measurable difference. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Moms with nannies - when do you pay them for vacation weeks? Our nanny is taking 2 weeks off. I gave her one week pay in advance on her last day before leaving, and told her I'd pay her for the 2nd week on her first day back at work. She looked a bit surprised, although didn't complain. Was that inappropriate? It seemed like alot to give her 2 weeks pay in advance. 20 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Even for 2 weeks in a row? This is a relatively new nanny (has only worked for 9 months but I said it was okay to take an early vacation) and my previous nannies haven't taken 2 weeks together. OP: that was my concern -- I didn't do it to be controlling but simply because it was a huge amount of money to pay in advance (and in most workplaces, you don't get paid in advance). I didn't want her to think I doubted she'd come back, but it just seemed unreasonable for her to expect to get all her money 2 weeks early. [ Reply | More ]

Most professional people have direct deposit, so while they don't get the money early they don't get it late either, it shows up when it is supposed to, so I don't think your comparison flies so well. And nannies often need the money for vacation. But in any case it is water under the bridge for you now. I assume you will give her the rest of the money the day she comes back. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Right, as I said in my post I told her I'd give her the 2nd week the day she came back, so she gets her first week pay 7 days early, and her 2nd week 3 days late. Not "everyone" has direct deposit, so I didn't think this was unreasonable. Who gets paid 2 weeks in advance anyway? Or perhaps I'm cranky because I'm paying for so much away time -- she's taking her vacation separately from ours, so she'll also get at least another 2 weeks this summer plus various days for long weekends, all of which she gets paid in advance. I guess I just didn't feel like paying her an entire 2 weeks in advance since she was taking them in a row. [ Reply | More ]

i don't know why OP's nanny needs 2 weeks off, but if she is like most, she is probably going to visit family. i think 2 weeks is reasonable. many nannies use vacation time to go back to their home countries--with their kids during summer break. i think less than 2 weeks to visit their family and relatives in another country is way too short. as an employer of someone from another country, people should think of what is fair, rather than what is in the rule books. also, many nannies cannot afford more than one trip abroad per year (tickets, coordinating dh's sched, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

OP: As I said, I don't mind her taking the 2 weeks in a row, but I do mind a bit the fact that the expectation is that she gets all her money in advance. My thinking was that in the "real world" you are paid end of every week. So the first week she already has her money, the 2nd week she would get paid on Friday and gets money Monday instead because she isn't there. Most people do this -- I guarantee you that not everyone uses direct deposit -- I don't, and I pick up my check the next time i'm at work (and we have a more than 2 week delay getting paid, I don't get paid Friday for the work I did up to Friday). being a nanny is not a corporate job. more often than not, their financial situations are more precarious than their employers...therefore, i think you should look at the situation and not the rule book when it come to this. take a look at her needs...maybe she doesn't need the money in advance, but if she is, say, going to her home country for 2 weeks, maybe she does, to buy presents, clothes, goods (which relatives always expect). We had a nanny freak out on us once. My DH (not the most on top of things guy) usually pays her. He forget to get out extra cash earlier in the week, so he coudn't pay her in advance (and this was only for a week vacation). She left and slammed the door on him screaming "you don't respect me" He was definitely wrong to do this, but after that point, it was clear that she wasn't going to last that long (she lasted another year, but the attitude used to kill me). I'm going highjack your post here, and just state that I really think most nannies talk about/denigrade their employers incessantly, and any chance to criticize us to their nanny friends on the park bench so they seem like the martyrs is their way of passing time. OP: I'm sure that is true. I'm pretty sure this nanny would never complain directly to us because I really do think she knows she has a good deal -- we pay her for a ton of time when we are gone as well as the 2 weeks vacation, and never ask her to coordinate vacation at all. I thought I was being fair by giving her the one week early, but I didn't know if I was imagining her reaction (from the responses here, I guess I wasn't -- she expected to be paid for both weeks). Oh well, not much I can do about it now - I don't think it's that big of a deal -- she's not going away, just spending time with her family. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think being caught is as in your face as being "called out". According to my psd, if the tester suspects prep, it will be indicated on the report. For instance, if the kid doesn't require instructions, this is noted. Up to the *schools* to decide whether kid's playdate performance (and school report--preschools don't lie as doing so will ultimately impact their ability to get dcs into schools) matches erb score. Ultimately, it's an IQ test, and if your very average kid scores a 99/99/99, red flags will go up. [ Reply | More ]

know many who got that notation on the report, and still got in. of course they prepped, but it is very very hard to prove, and erb people do not want to take on a bunch of lawsuits. the tests are not infallible, and most average to bright kids, even prepped, with the right education will do fine. so its worth the risk for many. IMHO, unless you really know the schools well, it's better to wait for K. That way you can really get to know what differentiates them. [ Reply | More ]

PLease, you can tell you aren't in a hiring position. I hire and anyone can leave you at anytime. This isn't 1970 where people stay with companies for their whole careers. People jump around all the time. My experience is that the women who don't stay work for companies that indicated subtly that they didn't want them to. Thankfully mine isn't like that! So if you are 28 and have a child are you saying they are available for hire? I think you need to get out of 1961 and get a clue. Quite honestly I think women who have children are way more efficient and organized then those without. It is like once you have a child your multi-tasking and organization skills whip into overdrive. Watch out we may just take over your job! [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Need travel advice. My DH and I are taking a [much needed] vacation to Italy in early Sept. Flying into Rome, staying one night and heading to the Amalfi Coast. Question is, I'd love to go to Positano but I've heard it's so touristy. Is it worth staying 1-2 nights there or is there another town we could go to that doesn't feel overrun with other travelers. ANY OTHER ADVICE ON THE REGION IS APPRECIATED. 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

We stayed at the Villa Franco and had the most wonderful time. We were there in early October. It is a good central location with beautiful beach. The other towns seemed more "urban" for lack of a better word. I think Positano is the place to stay. You won't have any regrets. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] potty training: we cannot get ds to stop asking for diapers to poop in. he's been pee trained for over a month, but once pooped in his underwear and ever since asks for diapers and freaks out if we ask him if he wants to try to potty. go with it until he's ready. offer m&m's (2 for going poop, 1 for trying) for potty use. watch elmo's potty video. read "where's the poop" and "everyone poops". [ Reply | More ]

doing m & m's, have everyone poops, he's anti-Elmo (alas, because everyone tells me about that video...). Have tried toy bribes, stickers, doing it with him/next to him. Kind of stumped by this. Also, when he poops in a diaper, he then freaks about taking it off, which is new. [ Reply | More ]

yeah. sometimes they like to stay close to their poop for a while. from a developmental perspective, pooping is a child's first creative act. it feels like a part of them and can be scary to let go of. I would not push this right now. it sounds like he is not quite ready to go on the potty. i would lay off even suggesting the potty for a while, but keep reading the books and get some more books about it (like i said,"where's the poop" is great). and just be patient. Np. some kids gets scared of the mess and loosing something from his body. If you can bare it then take off the poopy diaper and show him tipping the poop into the toilet and flushing it away. GL [ Reply | More ]

my dc pooped in a pull up for months after being potty trained for pee. Just let it go. He is not ready and it is very common for poop to come later than peeing in the potty. [ Reply | More ]
