Just had a vbac at Cornell. I believe it helps a LOT to have an OB who is supportive, but there's more to it than that. I think you should find an OB who you really like and hire a doula. You really need to labor at home for as long as possible and avoid interventions if you want to do this, and a doula will make that happen. I wouldn't have gone to Moritz, personally, because I wouldn't be able to stand the waits everyone talks about. He also highly recommends doulas, from what I've heard. [ Reply | More ]

OP, I very much agree with those who've suggested going with a midwife, but if you're very set on an OB, I'd recommend Jackie Worth--she delivers at Lenox Hill but is VERY pro vaginal birth and is just starting to also deliver at St. Vincent's (which is known to be much more progressive and lower intervention in general) [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Intersested whether anyone has heard of a dc who did K at one of the gifted programs in NYC and then redid K at one of the privates the following year. Am specifically wondering if coming from a public to a private w/o a psd to help will put as at a disadvantage. Also, wondering if redoing K (coming from a gifted K the year earlier) would be crazy to even consider. BAsically, I am trying to decide whether it pays to go through the private app process this fall just in case the gifted public is not the best fit for dc and we want to transfer out to a private that is a better fit. 29 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The G&T will not help you at all with the application process. It will be a hugh PITA and send a bad message to dc that her school that she just started is not good for her. ALl in all a bad idea. Just wait a year and apply to privates from preschool or decide to stick it out for elementary school at public. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know why people here are being so negative. I assume your child has a fall b-day so that's why he would repeat K. I know a lot of people who have started out doing what you are planning. honestly, in the end, they decided they loved their public school, but it's very common and no big deal to apply out from public K. It's not very common at all. There may be 1-2 kids that do it every year, but no more than that. I think if OP wants to go it she needs to pick wisely a limited number of schools (ideally no more than 4) and really suck up to the teacher to ensure good report. If she applies to 10-12 schools and is obnoxious about it, it is a kiss of death. [ Reply | More ]

I have a late Dec bday child, whom we removed from G&T(district) after less than a month and returned to Private pre-K. This is different than if my child had completed the entire school year, yet it really was a drab re-cap of knowledge and skills that were already in place and lacked any enriched or articulated curriculum. It was not a very intellectually stimulating year, yet it had some socio-emotional benefits. This is a PG child and we don't feel obliged to be academically aggressive at this young age. Private K is a very different experience from public and imo, seems it would be a more positive than redundant experience, for a child to have an ongoing environment and community. [ Reply | More ]

If your concern is a teacher report, don't hesitate to call the DoA at privates to which you're applying and ask them- in as simple language as possible. This isn't a unique situation and they are aware parents may face these issues coming from public-it's one of the big differences. Just do not emphasize how public is inferior; stay on point that you are simply commited to private for your child. [ Reply | More ]

Of course someone would if the finances were just too tight. Probably thinking they could reapply for middle or high school when the difference between private and public are most notable. We got DS into a TT this year and I was considering giving it up if we got DS into Anderson. I love the private (our FC) and IMO it's better suited for DS - but if you make under $300K combined - privates are tough to afford. [ Reply | More ]

op- was he a good sleeper at home? Was it your first time with him overnight on a plane? My ds has been overseas before (at 5mo) and while he was a horrible sleeper then he did manage 5 hrs straight on the plane. You are scaring me! [ Reply | More ]

Bring lots of snacks and be prepared to work! Is dc walking yet? If so, you will be up and down the aisles. I've done trans Atlantic flights many times by my self with 2 dcs from when they were infants to now (7 and 10). [ Reply | More ]

op- yeah, dh has to work so its just me. overnight ewr to copenhagen, have family meeting me there so that part will be ok. He is trying to walk but a crawling madman who has ants in his pants all day long. great sleeper at night but not sure how to make him comfortable for the overnight part. booked bulkhead so I thought I would make a soft area in front of me with blankets for him and hopefully that will work. Not sure what else to do. I know I will be busting my a** the whole time he is awake to keep him entertained so the tips are super helpful! [ Reply | More ]

That is what you'll have to do - make a nest of blankets - my dbs had not too much trouble falling asleep that way, the only issue is noise - can he handle things in/on his ears? You might want an ipod with classical soothing music to help him sleep. [ Reply | More ]

op- oh, and he's 33 lbs so I can't do the bassinette which was awesome last time I went with dh for christmas. This is also why things can get especially difficult when I have him alone- so heavy I have physical therapy for carpel tunnel from lifting him all day! [ Reply | More ]

I just do. I don't believe that we show up one day out of the blue and we just die. I also don't think that in this enormous universe we are the only living beings out here. I believe there is another life after this physical one..but that's me [ Reply | More ]

Because I believe in God. I believe in science and evolution, too, but the world and the universe and all of their intricate processes function simply too perfectly for there not to be a higher purpose and power in place. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] 6.5 mo ds doesn't sleep more than 1-2 hours at a time on a good day, and that includes through the night. He sleeps with us at night, and nurses at least twice, but also comes on and off throughout the night to suck when he wakes. Babysitter now puts him down in crib during the day for naps, which never exceed 40 minutes, and before leaving at night. Dh then tries to get him back to sleep with each waking, but he never makes it past third waking (usually by 9-9:30), and I end up going to bed early with ds. He is a high-needs baby who won't take paci, and I don't feel like he has the temperment for Ferber. Please help! 2 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

this is a really tough age. Our ds also started waking up every couple of hours at this time. We had him in his crib and my husband and i would switch off to go in there and rock/nurse him back to sleep. He also did not take the paci. I was working and I just couldn't take it any more and we used CIO (Ferber)--nothing else worked. You might just try it for a few nights and be surprised. I'm not going to lie, it is tough, but remind yourself that it is not good for your db to be up that much at night either. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I am considering buying a Bug just as a status thing. I am pg with #3, hope this is my last db, and have a perfectly great P&T already. Please flame some sense into me. The hype over the Bug is such that I have convinced myself that I may be missing something with out it. I have never had stroller fever before, is this because I see this as my last pg and my last chance to buy all these cute baby things? 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm pg with my 3rd and never had the urge for a bug. They just don't appeal to me. I don't buy things just because it's the fad or norm. I know too many ppl with it that have 2 yr olds that look like they can't fit in it anymore. That's a shit load of money for something that you can't get a good 4 yrs out of and isn't lightweight or bus friendly. I'm in Manhattan and need to have the easy of a good stroller that I can fold in a pinch to get on the bus or taxi. Also one that's comfy for my dc for long walks. [ Reply | More ]

op: Thanks for the responses. I never thought the bug was cute before and it has been around forever, without ever tempting me. My biggest issue is that it is not light or practical for someone like me who has other children. I think it must be first time moms who don't have the point of reference of second seats or folds up to nothing and is light like my Volo. So thanks. For now I think the urge is passing. Ours is a paint mix that I custom mixed myself from Ben Moore colors that is mostly green with blue and gray underhues. It looks more green in the morning light, and more blue/grey in the evening. I adore it, and I often get comments about how relaxing the color is. We love it. [ Reply | More ]
