we make 200K and choose not to afford private. besides the fact that we believe in public schools, we choose to save for retirement. in addition, housing in nyc is really expensive. we own a 2BR 1 BA (less than 1000 sq ft) in morningside heights that we bought as part of a co=op conversion and maintenance and mortgage is over $4K per month. we never take a cab, don't live extravagantly at all. its tough. of course -- as i said, we chose not to go private, for reasons that were personal to us (significant savings, college). we are also very happy with our public school, however -- if we weren't, we might have made a different choice for the upper elementary school grades. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know what the separation policies are, but I read on UB that 87 offers a "camp" for incoming K DC the week before school starts. I've never heard of any other school do this. I would ask current parents or the parent coordinator about this, but if you're worried about transition this seems like a great opportunity. [ Reply | More ]

PS87 eases into it. They offer a week of kindercamp, if you want, right before school begins. Then the first week of real school is 1 hour, then 2 hours, then 3 hours, then another 3 hours. They don't start full days until the second week. Parents bring the kids to the classroom for the first few months, and can stay until dc is comfortable--up to a half hour if needed. Teachers offer assistance with the separation process if you want it. They handle it very well and really work with you. Ignore the PITAs who are criticizing you, it's a legitimate question and I was happy that 87 dealt with it so well. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I'm impressed. My DC went to K at a good gen'l ed on UES, and have DF w/DC at most of the UES gen'l eds and LL, and none of them ease into K like this. Ours had two short days w/half the class, then right into the full day by the 3rd day. Sounds like you can't do better than 87 if you want a gentle transition. [ Reply | More ]

At 199, parents can stay for about an hour on the first day, but after that you drop off your kids in the yard and leave them with the teacher. Parents don't go into the classroom unless invited for specific events. The first two days of school are half-days for K. [ Reply | More ]
