One can choose to save the $ but if you make $200k, you could afford 1dc to private if you live modestly. I don't understand posts that say $300k is hard to afford 1dc to private. It's all about allocating resources. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm saying there are families who make between $200k and $300k who want to consider private but UB posters are saying don't bother. These families think they might be able to but they hear stuff like "you can't afford it" [ Reply | More ]

Anyone who believes UB chatter without running their own numbers is a huge fool. [ Reply | More ]

we make 200K and choose not to afford private. besides the fact that we believe in public schools, we choose to save for retirement. in addition, housing in nyc is really expensive. we own a 2BR 1 BA (less than 1000 sq ft) in morningside heights that we bought as part of a co=op conversion and maintenance and mortgage is over $4K per month. we never take a cab, don't live extravagantly at all. its tough. Good for you. But I'm simply saying it's mathematically possible. [ Reply | More ]

depends largely on housing costs. we make more than $500k and chose not to put dc in private -- housing costs are high, and it's important for us to save adequately and pay for college 100%. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I agree that it'll be impossible if your housing costs are high, say $5k-7k/month. [ Reply | More ]

ours are $7k a month. we could do it, but it would mean sacrificing savings substantially (basically, dipping into bonuses to pay tuition -- something we weren't prepared to do). [ Reply | More ]

of course you can with $500k. you choose not to. and good for you. but people can afford 1 or even 2 tuitions with $500k. [ Reply | More ]

of course -- as i said, we chose not to go private, for reasons that were personal to us (significant savings, college). we are also very happy with our public school, however -- if we weren't, we might have made a different choice for the upper elementary school grades. [ Reply | More ]

sure you could. but throwing away $30k a year for the next 13 years makes me stop and think, though. [ Reply | More ]

education isn't "throwing away" $. [ Reply | More ]

the only education that is worth that much money would be college. Maybe high school. [ Reply | More ]

throwing away? I don't think educations is throwing away..unless you pay for your dc college and they don't go to classes. That's throwing away [ Reply | More ]

in most cases, yes, but you don't know everyone's circumstances. they could be paying off student loans while taking care of elderly parents or a sick dc, or dealing with some other catastrophic life event. [ Reply | More ]
