[ - ] My 11-year-old DD is interested in sleepaway camp next summer. I went to sleepaway as a teen and have always had a desire to go back to camp myself. When we pick a camp, I am considering applying to work in the office. Anyone ever work at a summer camp as a mom, not as a young counselor? (Been there, done that.) My DH is not too happy about the idea of being left alone at home all summer, but when will I ever have this chance again? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

during the first two weeks, the classes that I went to were very crowded. the crowds seem to have thinned out. I haven't had to reserve for class in advance. I don't think they've finished working on the building. There are definitely not 6 studios in operation at all time. The teaching staff is small but the teachers I've had have been good. went to one in brooklyn. i think you're generalizing too much about privates in NYC (and, by inference, public schools in NYC). we can agree to disagree -- i'm a sort of "live and let live" type when it comes to school choice, thinking that school decisions are highly individualized and that the criteria that goes into defining what is "the best" are highly subjective. most people still dont think that way and I think there have always been some who would agree with me. I'm just saying what I believe and it has been hard fought and a long battle. Not an easy place to get to. I love talking about this stuff though [ Reply | More ]

Whether you believe in God or not, does not matter. The important thing is to have a good heart, a warm heart, in daily life. Thjis is the principle of life- the Dalai lama [ Reply | More ]

I don't anymore. Towards the end of my belief I used to pray everyday for God to show me that he/she existed. Life is much easier when you believe in God. [ Reply | More ]

It was a little more complicated than that. I researched it and I am still researching it reading both Christian and aethist writers/philosophers. It is a great question that everyone must grapple with - at this point I do not believe. [ Reply | More ]

Pascal said, basically, it costs you very little to behave as if there is a God and the rewards are infinite. Therefore, in the absence of absolute proof that God did not exist, it would be foolish to do anything else. (I'm sure he said it much better that is my interpretation and recollection of Blaise Pascal. This is usually refereed to as "Pascal's Gambit.") [ Reply | More ]

very similar to the Dalai Lama quote above- it doesn't really matter whether you believe in god or not, just be kind- nothing to lose there [ Reply | More ]

Except, I think Pascal's Gambit is much more crass. It is about what you are going to get in return for your behavior. [ Reply | More ]

Not a snob, simply observant. What is meant to Marx is what it means to her you moron. It is not open to interpretation, it is a quoted observation from the father of the system. My god. [ Reply | More ]

I could argue both sides. I do think that a belief in God is helpful as a child so we are attending church with our kids. But as they get old enough to understand ambiguities, I'll explain things in less black and white terms and let them make their own decisions. Right now, I like the community aspect and social outreach of our church so I'll take the God part along with it. [ Reply | More ]
