Anyone know what the separation policy is for K at Ps 87 or ps 199? We're considering both areas and my DD separates pretty well as long as she is eased into the transition. Do they just make you leave them right away? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you would base your choice on the new days at the beginning of K that your dd might have separation issues??? How about making you choice based upon the quality of the school since that will be the key issue for six years of your dd's eduction. [ Reply | More ]

i happen to ask one question and you think that this is my only factor when making a decision? why do people on this board jump to conclusions rather than answer the question if you know the answer and if you don't know the answer ignore the post! [ Reply | More ]

if you have not moved, I would be more concerned that 199 will loose all its extra classrooms next year. Th year after it will have not choice but to use the gym or raise class size. I find it hard to believe that you would even consider initial separation against long term problems [ Reply | More ]

i don't think they do, but some want yu to drop the kid in the yard or cafeteria, some let you go to the classroom, some let you go into the classroom, etc. not uniform. [ Reply | More ]

How about just stay away -- what kind of entitlement crap is that???? GO to private school -sounds like that's what you're looking for for your special child. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know what the separation policies are, but I read on UB that 87 offers a "camp" for incoming K DC the week before school starts. I've never heard of any other school do this. I would ask current parents or the parent coordinator about this, but if you're worried about transition this seems like a great opportunity. [ Reply | More ]

PS87 eases into it. They offer a week of kindercamp, if you want, right before school begins. Then the first week of real school is 1 hour, then 2 hours, then 3 hours, then another 3 hours. They don't start full days until the second week. Parents bring the kids to the classroom for the first few months, and can stay until dc is comfortable--up to a half hour if needed. Teachers offer assistance with the separation process if you want it. They handle it very well and really work with you. Ignore the PITAs who are criticizing you, it's a legitimate question and I was happy that 87 dealt with it so well. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I'm impressed. My DC went to K at a good gen'l ed on UES, and have DF w/DC at most of the UES gen'l eds and LL, and none of them ease into K like this. Ours had two short days w/half the class, then right into the full day by the 3rd day. Sounds like you can't do better than 87 if you want a gentle transition. [ Reply | More ]

At 199, parents can stay for about an hour on the first day, but after that you drop off your kids in the yard and leave them with the teacher. Parents don't go into the classroom unless invited for specific events. The first two days of school are half-days for K. [ Reply | More ]
