Moms with nannies - when do you pay them for vacation weeks? Our nanny is taking 2 weeks off. I gave her one week pay in advance on her last day before leaving, and told her I'd pay her for the 2nd week on her first day back at work. She looked a bit surprised, although didn't complain. Was that inappropriate? It seemed like alot to give her 2 weeks pay in advance. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Even for 2 weeks in a row? This is a relatively new nanny (has only worked for 9 months but I said it was okay to take an early vacation) and my previous nannies haven't taken 2 weeks together. I did pay the first week in advance. I guess I'm asking whether this seems okay, even if some people do pay both weeks in advance. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with the other poster--it's kind of controlling not to give it all in advance, as if you don't trust nanny enough to come back. [ Reply | More ]

I dont get an advance from my boss when I go on vacation. I think in the nanny world things may be different, but I don't it was wrong either. [ Reply | More ]

in advance. it feels kind of controlling to give her part in advance, part later. [ Reply | More ]

OP: that was my concern -- I didn't do it to be controlling but simply because it was a huge amount of money to pay in advance (and in most workplaces, you don't get paid in advance). I didn't want her to think I doubted she'd come back, but it just seemed unreasonable for her to expect to get all her money 2 weeks early. [ Reply | More ]

Most professional people have direct deposit, so while they don't get the money early they don't get it late either, it shows up when it is supposed to, so I don't think your comparison flies so well. And nannies often need the money for vacation. But in any case it is water under the bridge for you now. I assume you will give her the rest of the money the day she comes back. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Right, as I said in my post I told her I'd give her the 2nd week the day she came back, so she gets her first week pay 7 days early, and her 2nd week 3 days late. Not "everyone" has direct deposit, so I didn't think this was unreasonable. Who gets paid 2 weeks in advance anyway? Or perhaps I'm cranky because I'm paying for so much away time -- she's taking her vacation separately from ours, so she'll also get at least another 2 weeks this summer plus various days for long weekends, all of which she gets paid in advance. I guess I just didn't feel like paying her an entire 2 weeks in advance since she was taking them in a row. [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't know how common it is but it seems fair. [ Reply | More ]

i don't know why OP's nanny needs 2 weeks off, but if she is like most, she is probably going to visit family. i think 2 weeks is reasonable. many nannies use vacation time to go back to their home countries--with their kids during summer break. i think less than 2 weeks to visit their family and relatives in another country is way too short. as an employer of someone from another country, people should think of what is fair, rather than what is in the rule books. also, many nannies cannot afford more than one trip abroad per year (tickets, coordinating dh's sched, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

OP: As I said, I don't mind her taking the 2 weeks in a row, but I do mind a bit the fact that the expectation is that she gets all her money in advance. My thinking was that in the "real world" you are paid end of every week. So the first week she already has her money, the 2nd week she would get paid on Friday and gets money Monday instead because she isn't there. Most people do this -- I guarantee you that not everyone uses direct deposit -- I don't, and I pick up my check the next time i'm at work (and we have a more than 2 week delay getting paid, I don't get paid Friday for the work I did up to Friday). being a nanny is not a corporate job. more often than not, their financial situations are more precarious than their employers...therefore, i think you should look at the situation and not the rule book when it come to this. take a look at her needs...maybe she doesn't need the money in advance, but if she is, say, going to her home country for 2 weeks, maybe she does, to buy presents, clothes, goods (which relatives always expect). OP again: So have you all had nannies who took 2 weeks in a row? As I said, all my previous experience has been for 1 week vacation at a time, which I've always paid in advance. So this is my first time with 2 weeks in a row. [ Reply | More ]

We had a nanny freak out on us once. My DH (not the most on top of things guy) usually pays her. He forget to get out extra cash earlier in the week, so he coudn't pay her in advance (and this was only for a week vacation). She left and slammed the door on him screaming "you don't respect me" He was definitely wrong to do this, but after that point, it was clear that she wasn't going to last that long (she lasted another year, but the attitude used to kill me). I'm going highjack your post here, and just state that I really think most nannies talk about/denigrade their employers incessantly, and any chance to criticize us to their nanny friends on the park bench so they seem like the martyrs is their way of passing time. OP: I'm sure that is true. I'm pretty sure this nanny would never complain directly to us because I really do think she knows she has a good deal -- we pay her for a ton of time when we are gone as well as the 2 weeks vacation, and never ask her to coordinate vacation at all. I thought I was being fair by giving her the one week early, but I didn't know if I was imagining her reaction (from the responses here, I guess I wasn't -- she expected to be paid for both weeks). Oh well, not much I can do about it now - I don't think it's that big of a deal -- she's not going away, just spending time with her family. [ Reply | More ]
