If you don't live there yourself, I'm not sure why anyone would care what you think. [ Reply | More ]

Fine, but do you also care about how much of a PITA it is for people who live there? You want other people to spend time, money, and energy just because you say so? [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it's a pain to recycle. Recycling is pretty much optional, so no one is forcing anyone to do anything [ Reply | More ]

Think about what you're saying. You're asking for a town to invest in a recycling program: that means new garbage trucks, new trash sorting equipment, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not asking anything! The OP just asked about information- I'm sure there are all levels of activity. Perhaps the town could partner with another town on a program. Ultimately, I think its a good idea to think of stewardship of the earth's resources. [ Reply | More ]

Of course it is. It's also a good idea not to be a know-it-all out of towner. [ Reply | More ]

I don't read OP's question as being a know-it-all. Maybe no one in the town has the energy or the resources. [ Reply | More ]

i grew up in this town and still have friends/relatives there, who would love to have a recycling program but haven't made the effort to get all the info. i understand that - they lead busy lives. i care about it this town and our planet and just thought if anyone had ideas, i would pass them along to people who DO live there. This may sound silly, but google, "How to start a recycling program" or some combination of those terms. Good luck & thanks for doing it [ Reply | More ]

honestly, the added gas mileage of trucking around the countryside to do a recycling program probably isn't all that much more environmentally friendly. [ Reply | More ]

I think she means getting the resources together for the town to start and maintain a program? [ Reply | More ]

yes, but how is this stuff going to get to town? Do you really think that people are going to bike it in? In a normal urban/suburban area, the costs are worth the benefits, but I doubt in a rural one they will make sense for anything besides maybe glass and metal. Plastic and paper have little usefulness in recycling, and most can only be recycled a couple times. [ Reply | More ]

I suppose that is where research would play a role. Best not to shoot something down that has a positive goal before knowing the scenario completely. Seems to me like recycling a couple of times is preferable to waste. [ Reply | More ]

not necessarily when recycling plastic is pretty toxic too. I'm all for environmental responsibility, and I have cut down our waste hugely (one trash can every two weeks). But if she wants to start a save the earth campaign, there are far more effective ways to do it than this. This is just so she can feel better than the rural people that don't know any better. It is not going to make a big measurable difference. [ Reply | More ]

I don't get that the OP is saving the earth campaigning- just wanting info that she might use for this town. I see that as positive effort and small efforts are valid [ Reply | More ]

and I think that she should mind her own business and focus on her own community, not her parent's. [ Reply | More ]

there is no ugly motive here. and any difference would be a positive thing, in my opinion. that's like saying one person's efforts to live greener are pointless. it all adds up. (op) [ Reply | More ]

op here: i had to get off for a bit but am back. i'm not talking about a county/city-wide curbside service.... that clearly wouldn't fly. but i think there would be a lot of interest in a drop off location in the little town, which is where everyone has to go anyway to get groceries, etc... therefore, it wouldn't be additional fuel usage. anyway, i'm not talking about saving the earth single handedly... i just thought i might do a bit of research and provide some info to the people i know down there who do want to recycle/live greener. if they get it going themselves, who knows the limits??
