I don't think you understand what is going on here....wealthy people are leaving because they are being priced out. It's not good here. Housing, education and other things have become less affordable because they are not declining with the economy, at least not proportionately. (How do I spell that???) In other words, there are no bargains to be found here....there are barely any empty apartments! [ Reply | More ]

New York City 07.27.08, 09:27 AM Flag
»
For verbal: vocabulary and similarities are most important. For performance: block design and matrix are most important. If overall scores is high, coding doesn't really matter, especially if there are clearly no fine motor issues. I've also heard that a low score in picture concepts is often discounted because it is one of the first subtests given, and often dc don't do as well on it because they are sort of warming up to what is expected of them. [ Reply | More ]

I second all of this and it is consistent with what our PSD said. (Btw, I had never heard that about picture concepts - makes total sense to me. DC didn't do terribly well on that subtest and is really good at that sort of thing, so I wondered - that is a logical explanation.) [ Reply | More ]

If verbal is 99 but performance is 85 and total is 95, they will care. They don't like to see scatter so much. But scatter from subtest to subtest, probably okay. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think the market is changing much in NYC - certainly not like it is in some other parts of the world. Poster below is correct though that mortgage rates will be going up so any drop in prices will be offset by interest (which at least is tax deductible). Bottom line is that if you are Selling you are most likely Buying too so its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Don't try to time the market because you cannot succeed. [ Reply | More ]

I am a renter looking to buy and that is my suspcion, esp after Goldman and JPM will have already announced their puny bonuses in November. I really wanted to buy before sept, but thinking we are better waiting. Also, I sense that some buyers if they have to sell are entertaining lower offers. This all said, in the interim mortgage rates will probably rise so you will still have the same monthly payment, so I guess that could argue for tyring to buy now. [ Reply | More ]

I also like to have a doorman and be near-ish to the subway -- and that makes the cost of living so much more. Don't get me wrong, I love NYC, but I think there is a long lived misconception about the burbs. I live in Bergen county (Northern NJ)in a town with great public school system (really great) and I can walk to a supermarket, coffee shop, restaurants, town pool, playgrounds, my son's future elementary school, kids classes, etc. I agree, there are many places where I wouldn't want to live - too rural even for me. But there are many many towns that have a lot to offer. Additionally, since I drive a lot and am used to it I am more mobile than my friends who live in NYC. Any noted emigration of "artists and hip people", particularly in nyc, has become synonymous w/overcrowded, overvalued areas which lose much of their flavor, appeal and authenticity in the dustcloud of restructuring to accomodate the newcomers. There is nothing hip about being sheep; Exploring, risk taking and traveling less familiar places is ingrained in the art of living. If you're 'hip', you'll realize there is much to experience outside of the tri-state area. xo Native nyc-er with hip, artsy friends ps They all love to visit, have shows and collect $$ here- before exhaling and flying off. So, it is related to tier structure. Ongoing with preKs are lower on the academic scale so in this endless tier discussion I suppose this can be used to indicate a 2nd r 4rd tier school [ Reply | More ]

No, that's the thing. I SAH but it's not a stretch financially, so I'm not sure how that would impact me. But I have a burning desire to stay home and not one to work. I would probably do a lot with the financials before I had to go back to work when the kids are little. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] my spouse and i have a debate. is it safe to allow your 22 month-old to get out of their stroller and sit in your lap while on the subway? the follow-up question then is if it is decided to leave your 22 month-old in the stroller, what do you do if they have a temper tantrum because you won't let them out of the stroller. what's more important? consideration for your fellow riders or sometimes bending to your 22 month-old's temper tantrum to get out of the stroller and sit in your lap? 8 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It is perfectly safe to have your 22mo on your lap in the subway. Giving into a temper tantrum is an entirely different question. If it was something unsafe, then of course you shouldn't give into the temper tantrum. Generally, of course, you shouldn't give into a temper tantrum anyway, but sometimes you need to adjust for a situation. An alternative, of course, is to get off the train at the next stop and wait till the tantrum is over. [ Reply | More ]

np: I was going to post that, but I think it's a crazy rule. It's much less safe to try to juggle your squirming child and the stroller while you try to get on and off the train. [ Reply | More ]

Nope. Not safer at all. Baby's body next to yours is safest on stairs, through doors, and in train car. Best plan is to skip the stroller and switch to a good sturdy backpack. My Kilty got much more use than my MacLaren during the first two years of life and I take several train rides every day, bus rides, in and out of elevators, up stairs. Skip the stroller. It's just dead weight and encourages you to shlep around unnecessary junk. [ Reply | More ]

eh. we took the stroller all the time on the subway, especially from about 1 to 2.5. Before that it was often the Bjorn, and after, he walked, if we weren't going to far after the train. I never felt comfortable with the backpack, since I didn't know what the people behind me were doing, especially on the train. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] DH and I are barely making it every month. We own but have little savings. DH wants me to SAH until DC is in school which is another year. I worked part time up til this year but I think DH found it too hard for him. He has a pretty demanding job but doesn't want to put in a lot of extra time either because of that. Would you stick it out one more year. Cutting it so close every month I find really stressful. We're not house poor but I just would like not too worry about being able to buy the extras. Anyone else out there going through this. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I would try to keep doing part-time. That seems like a reasonable compromise? How was it hard for dh? We're you working nights and weekends? It is hard to take care of dc after a hard day at work or all day on the weekend, but that's parenthood. [ Reply | More ]

If you are working nights and weekends, will you have time to spend with DH? Balance the additional stresses of you being out of the house for whatever amount of time it is and the benefit of the extra breathing room against the additional stress of staying home full time (time, money, etc) and the benefit of being able to focus totally on taking care of home and family (and ability for DH to focus more completely on his job etc.) I hope you find the right choice for you! Best gift each of my kids got was a certain lovey. For DS it was handmade teether called a Knotty Doll (probably can find similar online). He still sleeps with it. DD was given a Taggie--one of the small ones. I never would have thought to get that but she took to it immediately and it's a great soother. Another gift I like is some good cd's. Celtic Lullaby is especially good. [ Reply | More ]

I've been shower shopping like mad lately; I recently saw an awesome thing I'd have snorted at in the store. It's an Eddie Bauer rocking hammaock. It's not a hammock at all-it's a foldable, compact, well cushioned rocking platform for an infant. It seems so great as a soother for very young ones and moms can do their thing while seeing the babe and is a break from all the fussy, mobile-addled props for tiny ones. I saw one at Target(Bronx)for under $30. [ Reply | More ]
