Better odds with a Volunteer Legal Services agency. Most lawyers don’t just represent someone pro bono unless the person is indigent or there are compelling facts (objectively compelling, not just compelling to the person seeking pro bono legal assistance). [ Reply | More ]

This, for example if you are a starving artist, some organizations support the arts community by providing legal help for free to artists; if you are an immigrant or elderly there are groups that may be able to put in touch with immigrant or elder aid groups; similarly, anti-domestic violence non profits may assist clients with low fee or free legal representation for divorce. Pro Bono is short for the phrase “ Pro Bono Publico” Latin for “ For the Good of the Public”. It generally refers to legal work done without charge on causes that affect the public, like environmental issues, free speech, civil rights in a community, etc. What you are looking for is a lawyer who for some reason ( such as, s/he is new, has no clients and is hoping you will be able to pay something at some point) is willing to give you his time for free rather than charging you for it. Calling law firms asking for free legal representation is like calling doctors randomly asking if they will treat you without charge. Clinics exist for that purpose and someone may refer you, but a random medical practice doesn’t do this. Individual doctors may volunteer many hours of their medical services through organizations or causes that they choose, but not generally as a result of a random request from an individual calling the office. Some posters above gave you the best advice - call your local bar association. The NYS has association, the NYCounty Lawyers’ Assn, even the American bar assn, a national group. They’ll all direct you either to a roll of pro bono lawyers, or to their matrimonial sections, where pro bono help can be found. Don’t call law firms. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Most legal aid agencies don’t handle divorce, because they are relatively inexpensive and you can also divorce pro se. if you are a victim of DV, you should reach out to your local DV services agency- they may have legal resources. [ Reply | More ]

Then I was showing him a pic of the town Boy Scouts in costumes and he goes, “looks like they shop at the dollar store.” That last one made me want to send him to bed and cut the WiFi for the weekend. Maybe the kids he’s been hanging out with have been making this kind of comment and your dc has just picked up on it. Either way, give him a minuscule budget for something he needs, so he can only afford to get it at the dollar store. Then explain to him that you, as parents may be able to afford to shop elsewhere because you have worked hard to earn the money to do so, but he, as a non-earning individual ,has not even earned the privilege of shopping at the dollar store yet. So had best not disparage those who have. [ Reply | More ]

This. The dollar store comment is the only one I'd really react to. I wonder if that has something to do with knowing his parents wanted him to do Scouts (I noticed that you said he "refused" which implies he was being prodded a bit?) and feeling like he has to justify why he didn't or something. I would make clear with him that that was rude, and explain why and that I don't want to hear that kind of thing again. The other stuff is annoying and I'd say so but it's pretty common for kids this age to have an attitude and think adults are lame (and it's not this generation, I'm in my 40s and I remember middle-school-kids being awful). He's likely getting this from his friends and classmates. Tell him it bothers you but don't over-react. [ Reply | More ]

My friend's dd had to wear a brace in middle school. She handled it really well (certain hours in the day she had to wear it, other hours she had to take it off). It fit nicely under her clothes and was not visible. She is in high school now and no longer needs, issues seems to have been resolved. I recall that it sounded scarier than it actually was. GL. You are lucky you found it early. It kind of sucks but it is what it is. My daughter wore one. They are lighter and not as noticeable now. Make friends with the school nurse. Try both kinds of undershirts and buy her some new clothes that work with it. Just lots of hugs and pep talks. She will forget quickly when it’s over. The brace really doesn’t improve anything but it stops it from being worse. Eva Chen and Martha Hunt both had it. It’s more common than she thinks!! [ Reply | More ]

Some of my classmates took Organic Chemistry in the summer at an easier college to boost their grades and it worked. Also, I noticed that you use "we" multiple times in your post. If he didn't like Johns Hopkins, then there's no reason for him to apply. If he did, there's no reason not to. If you guys are worried enough about it that you're posting on UB, might as well just add it. [ Reply | More ]

I went to Hopkins for grad school. Worth applying but there are a couple things that would make me not want my kids to go there. Undergrad when I was there was cutthroat in a way that wasn't striving for excellence, but more naked ambition--I'm willing to cut you down in order to push myself up. Culture and social life seemed correspondingly bad. Also, lots of people want to go to med school there which makes it necessary to make higher grades if you want to go to med school to stand out. op: thank you. this (competitive environment) is what we've read about jhu and decided not to include it. I'm just trying to figure out if it was a right decision. hearing about cutthroat culture over and over makes me think it's better to skip for now. [ Reply | More ]

NP pre-med can be cutthroat in a lot of places that don't have a rep for it. I was pre-med and it was awful. I would not want my kids to go to a school KNOWN for it. It turned me off the whole thing and I went in to another area of science. [ Reply | More ]

Any elite school is likely to have a cutthroat premed program within biology/chemistry. If he's serious (and sure) about med school, he might be better off going to a great but not "elite" college and going to an elite medical school from there. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Double-space makes the UB posts difficult to read. I connect from my laptop, didn't try from phone. From laptop screen, the new double-space format made it difficult for me to scroll and read. WDYT? 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

For me, it's only in the Chrome browser. So I just use Firefox instead. Looks fine there. I guess Chrome made a change to their coding? [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone else actually really love their in laws? My dad had a crazy family who was so mean to my mom so I think I internalized that because my in laws are literally the sweetest, most perfect people. My mom passed away in my 20s and I know how hard it is and I am just terrified of losing them too. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

If I wasn't so close to my own Mom, I would think of. my MIL as my mom. She wanted me to call her mom but it just felt not right to my mom. I call her by her first name and she signs her cards " Your other mother." She has been a wonderful support for me and I love her son! [ Reply | More ]
