[ - ] How do snowbirds do it? I want to spend end of October through March in another location for better winter weather but sadly not excited by housing (feels like a trade off? better weather but worse home). Sign a lease for a year? furnish? sublet? fly out to do this or just arrange online? 6 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

+2 unless you are wealthy enough to afford help with maintaining a property a condo is the way to go. The only maintenance we do is to pulldown the hurricane shutters, clean out the fridge and leave the place for months on end. [ Reply | More ]

If I were to spend that long, I’d prob buy a place. When my kids were young, we spent feb in Miami Beach and rented for a month. When my husband retires and kids are gone, we will prob start spending 2 months of the winter (Jan and feb) somewhere warm. I already have 3 properties to maintain. I don’t want to deal w another, so we will rent. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree with previous posters - rent first and then if you like the place, buy there. You could try out different parts of the country - New Mexico, Arizona, ocean side FL, gulf side FL, southern states, etc. Then buy a condo (not a whole house) in a place you really enjoyed spending a few months. My ds needed OT for handwriting because he was still needing to think about how to form certain letters when he was 8. The school didn't find this, we had to work with an private pediatric OT. That is the best money we ever spent, and we have had our kids in a ton of activities over the years. We had her help him with his problems and then also teach him cursive. Public schools don't teach handwriting anymore. I wish I had started my ds earlier because he had to unlearn a lot which made it harder. I don't know if your dd needs it or not. I would look for a pediatric OT who uses the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. [ Reply | More ]

My ds did not have this but it could be normal. My ds could do normal fine motor stuff like legos, but he had undxed fine motor problem. Something to remember is that the range of normal is large at this age and the school isn't going to notice kids who are not huge outliers. But this is your child and early intervention means that the correction will take a lot less time. I would call around for an eye doctor who does testing for kids who need vision therapy but maybe does not do vision therapy themselves. Vision therapy is a little controversial (some people say it is unnecessary) but I know a reading specialist whose did everything to help her dd and in the end what helped was vision therapy. So YMMV. My kids' eye doctor screened for it and said my kids did not need it. I have another friend (another teacher) who found someone to do it for her child and she drove 45 min each way once a week to get it for her child. It is hard to find eye doctors trained in it. GL. They're both in the same region of the bay area. And, yes, families in the suburbs care about the great school ratings, but I just don't think that matters if it's a one-bedroom. The neighborhood the one bedroom is in looks safer than the three bedroom's neighborhood. It's just closer to San Francisco, so that's probably why the crime is higher. [ Reply | More ]

I agree that school statistics matter little for a 1 bedroom, other than the fact that a good school creates housing demand, which causes higher prices, which causes a higher income neighborhood, which creates a higher end business environment i.e. ripple effect. +1 House is usually better. I think it is because Prop 13 makes it better to remodel than to sell and buy something bigger, and you can't do that with a condo. Also a 1 bdrm is a problem. With 2 or 3 bedrooms you can rent to people who are professionals but have to have roommates because it is so expensive there. With a 1 bedroom you are limited to just single people or couples. My take: East Palo Alto is a long bet. It will probably gentrify but not overnight. Many buyers will be scared off by the name. The schools are terrible. SSF will appreciate (or not) along with the broader market. I know which area you’re talking about based on the schools — it’s great for commuting to the city. Not far from Genentech and YouTube (though EPA is close to Facebook). The weather isn’t as good as EPA (fog). I guess it depends on whether you plan to live in or rent out the properties while you wait for them to appreciate. (And if that’s your main goal — don’t buy now. The market is definitely softening but it’s still as expensive as it ever was.) [ Reply | More ]

OR of course this is a slight exaggeration. But keep in mind that it will still be pretty crowded. I would not do the condo. It will never appreciate as much as the house will there. Many bay area suburbs have school of choice with magnet schools and there are inexpensive parochial (Catholic) schools. With a house, people can buy it and add on a bathroom or add a second floor (although now it is crazy expensive there in the Bay Area to do that, have friends who just got bids back) but you can't do that with a condo. by crowded I mean that people do squeeze 5 people or more in to one bedroom condos so the complex itself will be crowded. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Newbie here----I am going through the online independent school applications. When I get to the parent statements---I am copy pasting into a word doc so I can draft and then go back and paste in. Here's my question, when I get to these--my options are to save/return later or Next. Next doesn't allow you to skip to the next section but instead requires you to paste something in the box. And when you hit next you see that it says "submitting". So is there a way to bypass the parents essay and keep going to see what else might be required? Thanks! 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

It is submitting to be saved. Application won’t be submitted until you pay the fee. Once you do the electronic signature page, it gives you a chance to review the entire thing before moving to the fee payment. You can enter anything and move on. However, parent statements that I’ve seen are all either on one page or a separate entry (in addition to the application). So if the parent statement is part of the application, the rest is likely just final details and electronic signatures. [ Reply | More ]

Also, forgot to mention that you can also go back once you see the draft application and enter your final statement(s)/edit. Until you pay the fee, it is a work in progress. [ Reply | More ]

Go to a preschool that is close to where you live. The "best" preschools are filled with kids who are legacies to the top schools. Those schools won't take a ton of kids from the same preschool. Kids don't need to be at the "best" preschool. They just need enrichment and socialization. Which preschools provide. [ Reply | More ]

"Best" is really subjective, it depends on what you like. What was best for me was not what was best for my friend, and we're each happy with our choices. And I wouldn't move to be near a good preschool. I'd move to get into a good zoned public. Preschool goes by in a flash. [ Reply | More ]

smart answer. and, I'll add so does k-2, so when applying to public, consider that. most early childhood educators are great, and it's very easy to apply out of district for a different elementary by 1st or 2nd as the space opens up. [ Reply | More ]
