7 year old DD is still spelling her name backwards sometimes, spelling 3 and 5s the wrong direction, things like this. I asked at public school and they said they think she's fine. Should I get an outside assessment? At what age is this a problem? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think she is fine. 7 yo DS reverses his S, 5 and prob some other letters. You have to keep correcting and ask her to look for examples on the sheet so she self corrects [ Reply | More ]

This. Have her write 100 of each letter and number every week, and 10 of her name every day. [ Reply | More ]

if she can read well in general, it's probably fine. if she's struggling to read, then worth getting a dyslexia test. [ Reply | More ]

My ds needed OT for handwriting because he was still needing to think about how to form certain letters when he was 8. The school didn't find this, we had to work with an private pediatric OT. That is the best money we ever spent, and we have had our kids in a ton of activities over the years. We had her help him with his problems and then also teach him cursive. Public schools don't teach handwriting anymore. I wish I had started my ds earlier because he had to unlearn a lot which made it harder. I don't know if your dd needs it or not. I would look for a pediatric OT who uses the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. [ Reply | More ]

Also contrary to pp above, my ds had zero problems with reading. He was reversing the b and d for example. [ Reply | More ]

ok cool. i will look into that. she can read pretty well, not flawlessly, obviously. but there's lots of times she sees otto and says toto! or evil and says level! it just seems like her eye is going to the wrong word. [ Reply | More ]

My ds did not have this but it could be normal. My ds could do normal fine motor stuff like legos, but he had undxed fine motor problem. Something to remember is that the range of normal is large at this age and the school isn't going to notice kids who are not huge outliers. But this is your child and early intervention means that the correction will take a lot less time. I would call around for an eye doctor who does testing for kids who need vision therapy but maybe does not do vision therapy themselves. Vision therapy is a little controversial (some people say it is unnecessary) but I know a reading specialist whose did everything to help her dd and in the end what helped was vision therapy. So YMMV. My kids' eye doctor screened for it and said my kids did not need it. I have another friend (another teacher) who found someone to do it for her child and she drove 45 min each way once a week to get it for her child. It is hard to find eye doctors trained in it. GL. Also I would get a private evaluation for dyslexia. I know it will be expensive but I know FIVE families in my area who had to get a private dx for dyslexia because the school districts (two different ones) would not test their kids for it. Some of the kids were not dxed until 3rd and 4th grade! GL [ Reply | More ]

Or you could wait and see if she struggles next year... the really painful thing is that the later the kids are dxed the more they internalize that they are not good at this stuff and it does a number on their self esteem. I don't know how your dd is doing and she may be on track, but maybe someone else reading is in a similar situation. [ Reply | More ]

FYI something like 15-20% of people have language based learning disabilities, so odds are good that if not your dd, someone else reading has a child in this situation. [ Reply | More ]

Past age 7 could be an issue. I would have her evaluated for dyslexia or other visual processing issue because if so you'd want to get her help early. https://www.understood.org/en/learning-attention-issues/child-learning-disabilities/dyslexia/faqs-about-reversing-letters-writing-letters-backwards-and-dyslexia [ Reply | More ]

np--My understanding is that dyslexia is an aural processing disorder. It's about not hearing the distinctions in sounds. [ Reply | More ]

This is find still at her age (called mirror writing) . You could get someone to give you a different dx but what's the point? Just wait a year. I'm sure by then it will have resolved. [ Reply | More ]
