Hi! In your opinion, what are the best 5-6 preschools in the city? We are new to the city, so I'd really appreciate you feedback. We are looking to apply for 2020, my child will be three years old. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

OP here: We live in midtown, but would not mind moving to another area on Manhattan or to the Bronx if our child gets accepted into a great preschool [ Reply | More ]

Unless you have tons of money. Most are doing UPrek and not moving to Bronx to be able to afford private [ Reply | More ]

I did not mean we'd move to Bronx to afford private, I meant schools location. I actually only mentioned Bronx because of Horace Mann, but then I realized their nursery is on Manhattan [ Reply | More ]

Go to a preschool that is close to where you live. The "best" preschools are filled with kids who are legacies to the top schools. Those schools won't take a ton of kids from the same preschool. Kids don't need to be at the "best" preschool. They just need enrichment and socialization. Which preschools provide. [ Reply | More ]

"Best" is really subjective, it depends on what you like. What was best for me was not what was best for my friend, and we're each happy with our choices. And I wouldn't move to be near a good preschool. I'd move to get into a good zoned public. Preschool goes by in a flash. [ Reply | More ]

smart answer. and, I'll add so does k-2, so when applying to public, consider that. most early childhood educators are great, and it's very easy to apply out of district for a different elementary by 1st or 2nd as the space opens up. [ Reply | More ]

This is excellent advice - at both public and private. Lots of spaces open up, and you can apply to schools out of zone [ Reply | More ]

Best based on what? Commute? Class size? Academics? Time outside? Truly unstructured vs “inspired” free play? Religious influence? Exmissions? Value for money by hour? [ Reply | More ]

I feel like class size is the same in most preschools on Manhattan, not sure if it's true. Probably based on how much the children actually learn there, so yes, academics. And exmissions matter for us as well. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, the minimums are. But my daughter’s (private) preK had four teachers for 20 kids. That was nice. And not Doe mandated. [ Reply | More ]

The old TT list is in this 2002 New York Magazine article (which weirdly has omitted the actual names): http://nymag.com/nymetro/urban/education/features/n_8067/ [ Reply | More ]

This article is odd to read in 2019...Harvey Weinstein and "Donald and Ivana Trump" are listed as prominent parents at various schools. [ Reply | More ]
