He's right, partially. You aren't supposed to display family photos in the public areas of the home. If you had a dinner party, would guests enter the family room? Or is it truly just for the family? [ Reply | More ]

Dear Miss Manners: My very proper mother taught us that one does not display pictures of oneself in one’s own home. I have always followed this rule and notice that all my relatives do as well, but I cannot find the rule written anywhere. Over my long life, friends have occasionally given me pictures of myself, some in frames. I have never displayed them, but I worry that I have hurt my friends’ feelings. Is my mother’s rule real and current? I actually like the rule, but want to do the right thing by my friends. Gentle Reader: The rule is still in effect, but your mother forgot to point out the loopholes. There are enough of those to accommodate your gallery. One is that you can properly display them in rooms that are considered somewhat private—your bedroom, your study, and, by extension, a family room. Another, on which Miss Manners expects to be challenged, is that a painted portrait is traditionally considered acceptable in the more public rooms, but photographs are not. She does not wish to argue against photography as an art, but let us say that photographs of you with the mayor or in your wedding clothes are best shown in the family’s area. Proper mothers are always right; but sometimes they need explaining. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with Miss Manners. I had a roommate in grad school who had pictures of herself posing as if she was a model on her desk. She looked nothing like a model and the whole ensemble seemed rather sad and deluded. I find the posed glam wedding and pregnancy portrait industry yields similar reactions - i.e. who does this person think she is? why isn't she happy with images of how she is in real life? why is she mimicking advertisements trying to sell fragrances? Except that for most people in 2019, there are no public areas of the home. Very few people have areas of their home where they might host a large dinner party with people other than their close family and friends. So the "rule" does not apply. If you are wealthy enough to have a large enough home, and guests who are not part of your "family circle", you keep your personal photos in private family areas and your formal portraits in public areas. Honestly, ”paintings” done from photographs are ”tacky” so it doesn't matter where you put it. Enjoy it for the experience and not for other people judging you. When you can afford it, have your portrait painted and if you don't know how to tell a good portrait painter don't be afraid to ask a friend for advice and consider having one done while you're on vacation- portraiture in England is really much better and they can ship it to you a few months later after it dries [ Reply | More ]

Was this through Kramer portraits? I won the same thing at a school auction, and had a miserable experience with them. Lots of high pressure selling, high cost for framing and shipping. An 8x10 "painting" of DC set me back $400. And there was not an iota of paint on this - but they did darken DCs hair and skin, and it looks nothing like my DC. I realize that this doesn't answer your question, but if it's the same vendor, please proceed with caution. But to answer your question, no, not tacky at all if it's a nice picture. [ Reply | More ]

It's a display of vanity and pride. Unless it is a Sargent, your guests will snicker and roll their eyes about your public self-aggrandizement when you aren't around. In a private room, that is more forgiveable as it is not for the non-admiring public. Regardless of where you put it, it's very kitsch and will be more appreciated by your children and their spouses as it would be kind of a sentimental joke of the bygone years. My in-laws had their teenage sons painted and you can guess how excited the steeped-in-irony meta humor grandkids are for the ridiculous portraits. Especially because both sons were divorced by their wives cuz they turned out to be losers waiting for their inheritances. [ Reply | More ]

I am really frustrated and not sure about next steps: About a year ago I started to get some neck pain on the left side, felt like a muscle ache - sometimes would radiate to the trapeze muscle (not sure I explain this well) after 3 months I went to an orthopedist who specializes in neck pain and they did ex rays, luckily said there is nothing really wrong w neck (I am 51 and as normal wear and tear he said just some mild osteoarthritis ) recommended some PT as he thought it was muscular - I told him that on a bad day the pain (never severe) would be felt on the left, all the way to my head. After a month of PT and not much improvement, someone recommended MAT (muscle activation therapy) it was expensive, I didi 9 sessions and honestly it made things better. Since massage was also recommended I did a few, then switched massage therapist for my last massage, almost 3 weeks ago and I thought she was a bit too firm... After 3 or 4 days I started to get pain on my left back side, near the shoulder... it has been there pretty much every day now (over 9 days) What do I do? Do you think the massage therapist has done some damage? I really hope its nothing serious. I did not want to go back to a doctor and not sure if I should just try more PT. It's frustrating and I hope to get rid of this soon. Thanks for reading a long post and apologies. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I had similar pain but I went immediately to a chiropractor. Turned out I had 2 slipped discs, a cervical reversal and 18 torqued vertebra. Most wanted to do surgery but I finally found one that didn't. I saw him way more than your 9 times (so maybe return to that?). I have exercises I do at home. I avoid activities that cause that pain (stress, computer, desk, sitting, texting, driving, high heels, looking up like in volleyball or to someone taller than me). I was seeing a chiro monthly and a RMT monthly but last year I had a third slipped disc and now I'm nervous about seeing either (like a massage / chiro adjustment can hurt). I also have degenerative arthritis. Keeping active 3+ hours a day, swimming in warm water, sleeping on my back, proper posture, all help. HTH P.S. I'm 38. [ Reply | More ]

I know they are made in Italy and usually all leather... honestly I was close to buying a pair on line, but cannot spend that kind of money on a sneaker (even though lately I wear them all the time). Are they extremely comfortable too? 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

So, I bought into them-- and the hype, after seeing every mom here in NYC wear them. Truthfully, they're not super comfortable; the inset is totally flat with zero arch support. I've had mine for 12 months now, wear them two or three times a week, and the soles are worn down to the point of almost having holes and the sides are peeling away. Probably won't be buying another pair of GG anytime soon. [ Reply | More ]

op- thanks for the feedback. I have also seen a few cute pairs on line (the low tops) but was wondering about quality. Last year a bought a pair that looks just like GG, the brand is called Quattro Barra 12 (Italian too) they are handmade in Italy, all leather, but I paid about $100 - they are very cute and were quite comfortable, but after 8 months of wearing started to peel at the sides and the sole is also all worn out... So I guess no reason to ever spend $300 more on golden goose. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Shopping at the grocery store this afternoon when I saw a boy, about 4, run to the bakery case, grab a donut and take a bite while his father wasn't looking. When Dad turned around and saw the boy with donut in his hand he went off. I was amused and didn't think it was that big of a deal, likely bc not my kid, but wondered how I might react if my dc had done the same when that age. How would you handle? 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

You pay for the donut and explain the child is not allowed to do that. You do not let child eat donut [ Reply | More ]

The grocery store isn't going to care, they can see with cameras that it's not shoplifting, but it is a teachable moment for your dc that you have to buy first. [ Reply | More ]

Hi, friendly Amazon Prime Now shopper mom here. Every shift I see many, many adults eating their groceries before paying for them. I say the boy sounds very grown-up! [ Reply | More ]

When ds was about 2 or 3 he used to grab hunks of cheese from the case at Trader Joe's, where they were down low at this level, and take a bite. Happened several times. I didn't make a huge deal, didn't laugh, told him no, paid for the cheese. And learned to watch him more closely when we were in that area. That said, you don't know anything about that family. Maybe ds has been ignoring rules all weekend. Maybe dad is super-worried about money and wasn't planning to pay for an extra donut. Maybe dad was just tired and having a shitty day and it just came out at that moment. You never know what's going on with other people. [ Reply | More ]

op: I only like and listen to few of their pieces such as nothing else matters, no leaf clover, one; they all sound much more beautiful with the SF symphony. [ Reply | More ]

The fact that you call them pieces might suggest you shouldn’t attend. [ Reply | More ]

Again, only you know if it’s “worth it.” Would it be worth it for me? No, I don’t dig Metallica. Would it be worth it for a fan? Probably. [ Reply | More ]
