Dd showed me a 1 page essay that she wrote and I told her it was mediocre and she should start over. I feel bad that I said that to her but it’s the truth. when I told her it was just fine, she was making excuses. Thoughts on how I handled? I want to set good study habits and don’t want to ruin her self esteem and also don’t want to get into a screaming match with her every day during the week. Tia. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Just be honest with her. She's not as smart as the other kids so she needs to work harder. [ Reply | More ]

Op: not sure that’s it....but she certainly doesn’t try her hardest and it shows. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think telling her it was "mediocre" is ideal. Did you also mention specific points that she might have improved on? I'm not saying you should do your child's homework, but you already involved yourself with less than constructive criticism [ Reply | More ]

What grade? Is she in the type of school where a teacher will provide constructive feedback? At some point, she just needs to own the work she does, and the grades that come with it. [ Reply | More ]

How old is she? Saying something is mediocre is not helpful feedback. If you can't articulate what the problem is or give constructive feedback then you should find someone else to help her with her writing and keep your mouth shut. [ Reply | More ]

+2. In my first job out of law school, one of the partners would scream that your motion or brief or whatever was s***. You would ask what was wrong with it, and in a mock-sensitive voice he would say "it's garbage. It's an abortion. ..." Ah, memories! [ Reply | More ]

Well that wasn't too helpful. Did you break down where she needed to improve? Just saying something is mediocre isn't helpful. [ Reply | More ]

How old is DD? that would influence my answer. If young, let it go. I've tempted to take a red pen and mark up DD's writing, but you know, she's 8, so the writing's not perfect. I realized that I had unrealistic standards of what 8 year old writing could be. [ Reply | More ]

That's not constructive criticism; I don't know how old she is, but I would be annoyed too. [ Reply | More ]
