My DS who is applying to colleges this year and really into bilogy and wants to go to medical school. John Hopkins is not in his college list. Will we regret not including John Hopkins? If we will, we can add it, still have time. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Ha ha ha ha. Is he a straight A student who took the most advanced classes he could, got close to 1600 on SAT or 35 or more on SAT, and did a serious research internship? Otherwise, no chance. unless there's some hook you haven't mentioned. [ Reply | More ]

It's probably a school like Case Western or Boston College. If he has an unweighted 4.0, took advantage of the advanced classes his school offers, and worked in an industry related to his major, and held leadership positions in his extracurricular activities, that would be appropriate. Your DS has nothing to lose by adding it to his list. However, if the supplemental essay adds significantly to his stress level, I wouldn't bother. When we visited Johns Hopkins, about six kids left in the middle of the tour...this didn't happen on any of the other college tours we went on. My sense is they concluded pretty quickly that it wasn't a good fit (and I'm not referring to academics). [ Reply | More ]

I'm confused. It's August. Applications for RD aren't due for months. If you have $70 apply. There's no large question here. [ Reply | More ]

we try to visit before seriously considering to apply. ds already has 10 schools to apply and not enough free time left after school and extracurriculars. in short, there is plenty of time but he needs to use it effectively. [ Reply | More ]

So you would rather spend like 2 thousand dollars and 2 days of your time to visit a school to save $70? [ Reply | More ]

I went to Hopkins. I loved my time there, but it is very competitive for those who want to go on the pre med track. There’s also great opportunities that may not be as easily available in other places. I would say they have to be drawn to the school first not just assume that it will be good fit because they want to go into medicine. [ Reply | More ]

If your son wants to go to medical school, he needs very good grades in college. In my experience, the grades themselves seemed more important than the quality of the class. Some of my classmates took Organic Chemistry in the summer at an easier college to boost their grades and it worked. Also, I noticed that you use "we" multiple times in your post. It is your son's college search and future. You might want to take a step back and be less invested in the whole process. [ Reply | More ]

If he didn't like Johns Hopkins, then there's no reason for him to apply. If he did, there's no reason not to. If you guys are worried enough about it that you're posting on UB, might as well just add it. [ Reply | More ]

I went to Hopkins for grad school. Worth applying but there are a couple things that would make me not want my kids to go there. Undergrad when I was there was cutthroat in a way that wasn't striving for excellence, but more naked ambition--I'm willing to cut you down in order to push myself up. Culture and social life seemed correspondingly bad. Also, lots of people want to go to med school there which makes it necessary to make higher grades if you want to go to med school to stand out. op: thank you. this (competitive environment) is what we've read about jhu and decided not to include it. I'm just trying to figure out if it was a right decision. hearing about cutthroat culture over and over makes me think it's better to skip for now. [ Reply | More ]

NP pre-med can be cutthroat in a lot of places that don't have a rep for it. I was pre-med and it was awful. I would not want my kids to go to a school KNOWN for it. It turned me off the whole thing and I went in to another area of science. [ Reply | More ]

Any elite school is likely to have a cutthroat premed program within biology/chemistry. If he's serious (and sure) about med school, he might be better off going to a great but not "elite" college and going to an elite medical school from there. [ Reply | More ]
