Medical Question: my 79 yo mother recently passed out. I was not present. My drunk brother claims her heart stopped and gave her mouth to mouth. I brought her to the hospital, where she had an EKG (normal), chest x Ray and blood tests(no idea what was tested...were normal). They told her to follow up w her doctor who says it’s a non issue. She’s always been in good health, non smoker, relatively active and eats well enough. Any further testing needed? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Your mom is getting older. There is no crystal ball beyond the test results. [ Reply | More ]

Im not asking for a crystal ball. I’m asking if there are other tests that need to be completed. [ Reply | More ]

When I passed out randomly in my mid 30s, I also had a CAT scan and a test where I wore a heart monitor for 24 hours. [ Reply | More ]

I had this too - and a blood pressure monitor. But nothing much came of it. [ Reply | More ]

Did they say it was a vasovagel thing? Blood sugar? Blood pressure? If all tests were normal, as scary as it must be for you, just take a watch and see approach. [ Reply | More ]

Blood pressure was normal, not sure about blood sugar. I get that she’s old and shit happens, but also want to make sure that there isn’t something being missed that could be righted. [ Reply | More ]

You only give CPR to someone whose heart has stopped; otherwise the heartbeat is confused. The EKG would have shown the "heart attack" and it obviously did not. Have your mother give you permission, in writing, to talk with her doctors so you can get an idea of what is going on. [ Reply | More ]

Ok, but do follow up. ER are about stabilizing and making sure no one is dying You have to go to a doctor that knows you and can follow your health. Glad she's not seriously hurt. [ Reply | More ]

She could have a cardiac arrhythmia. Sometimes they come and go, so it might not be caught. She should see a cardiologist. [ Reply | More ]

Is she taking vitamins or supplements? I believe too much Vitamin D caused me to pass out. All tests were normal ( and I ended up wearing a 30 monitor after the 24 day one.) [ Reply | More ]

You say she eats well enough, but could she be dehydrated and/or low in sodium and potassium? [ Reply | More ]
