My 10 yo ds is so snarky and it’s really bothering me and also wondering where he gets it. We were watching that show A list and he said the counselors are “ cringey” like his teachers, criticed the “waste of my 20 minutes” on watching the show. Then I was showing him a pic of the town Boy Scouts in costumes and he goes, “looks like they shop at the dollar store.” That last one made me want to send him to bed and cut the WiFi for the weekend. He refused to do scouts and quit the only sport he liked recently to. And he’s 10 going on 40. WWYD to instill some humility? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Newsflash! No-one wants to be "served" or deal with your privileged, snot nosed kid! He's not doing anyone any favors with his presence. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe the kids he’s been hanging out with have been making this kind of comment and your dc has just picked up on it. Either way, give him a minuscule budget for something he needs, so he can only afford to get it at the dollar store. Then explain to him that you, as parents may be able to afford to shop elsewhere because you have worked hard to earn the money to do so, but he, as a non-earning individual ,has not even earned the privilege of shopping at the dollar store yet. So had best not disparage those who have. [ Reply | More ]

Positioning shopping at the Dollar Store as punishment is unlikely to make him rethink his position on it [ Reply | More ]

Does he watch shows on the disney channel? I don't know if they have gotten better but a few years ago I would not let my kids watch because the kids all talked like this on those shows. [ Reply | More ]

The dollar store comment is rude but the others seem totally normal to me. [ Reply | More ]

This. The dollar store comment is the only one I'd really react to. I wonder if that has something to do with knowing his parents wanted him to do Scouts (I noticed that you said he "refused" which implies he was being prodded a bit?) and feeling like he has to justify why he didn't or something. I would make clear with him that that was rude, and explain why and that I don't want to hear that kind of thing again. The other stuff is annoying and I'd say so but it's pretty common for kids this age to have an attitude and think adults are lame (and it's not this generation, I'm in my 40s and I remember middle-school-kids being awful). He's likely getting this from his friends and classmates. Tell him it bothers you but don't over-react. [ Reply | More ]
