My DD (9) found out today that she needs a brace for scoliosis. Anyone have any experience with this? There are worse things to deal with for sure but I’d love any experience you have to make this better for her over the next few years. Thanks! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I had scoliosis and needed a brace as a child. One of the specialists recommended trying intensive gymnastics classes instead (3-4 times a week at least). They helped so much that I never wore a brace. I was diagnosed and started much younger though. Not sure whether it’s an option at age 9. [ Reply | More ]

She's lucky. My scoliosis was never dx'd and I have a somewhat noticeable curve. Kid on our block had to get surgery b/c his was more pronounced and he became 2" taller afterwards. GL to your dd! [ Reply | More ]

My daughter has scoliosis and has to wear a brace. Join the FB groups (there’s a few — parents of kids with juvenile scoliosis etc). Very helpful community. [ Reply | More ]

My friend's dd had to wear a brace in middle school. She handled it really well (certain hours in the day she had to wear it, other hours she had to take it off). It fit nicely under her clothes and was not visible. She is in high school now and no longer needs, issues seems to have been resolved. I recall that it sounded scarier than it actually was. GL. This is very reassuring, thank you. This sounds like what we were told - 16 hours a day in the brace. It doesn’t seem visible under clothing. She can still do all of her activities. I’m thinking she will complain because it’s different and that’s sort of her, but I’m hoping she adjusts to the new normal quickly. [ Reply | More ]

not personally, but a girl in my class wore one in middle ( and high?) school. she's a therapist now. i think that as hard as it will be, its ultimately character building. You have to see the big picture, even though she wont for at least a decade. [ Reply | More ]

NP: There is a random pretty mature/explicit scene. Maybe not what you want for a 9 yo, or at least you might want to read it first. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe it will be an opportunity for her to learn how lucky she is to be living in a time/ place/ family where medical treatment is available for her condition, so she will grow up with a nice straight back free to do anything she wants. [ Reply | More ]

I agree and we talked about that a little bit - how it was disappointing and not what she wanted but that we are fortunate to have the ability to afford medical care (is good insurance), that it wouldn’t affect her life in huge ways, that her body is healthy and strong and she will be okay. You are lucky you found it early. It kind of sucks but it is what it is. My daughter wore one. They are lighter and not as noticeable now. Make friends with the school nurse. Try both kinds of undershirts and buy her some new clothes that work with it. Just lots of hugs and pep talks. She will forget quickly when it’s over. The brace really doesn’t improve anything but it stops it from being worse. Eva Chen and Martha Hunt both had it. It’s more common than she thinks!! [ Reply | More ]
