How do people find probono lawyers? What is the best way to find one? Should I call law firms one by one asking if they have probono lawyers to help with my divorce? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Better odds with a Volunteer Legal Services agency. Most lawyers don’t just represent someone pro bono unless the person is indigent or there are compelling facts (objectively compelling, not just compelling to the person seeking pro bono legal assistance). [ Reply | More ]

This, for example if you are a starving artist, some organizations support the arts community by providing legal help for free to artists; if you are an immigrant or elderly there are groups that may be able to put in touch with immigrant or elder aid groups; similarly, anti-domestic violence non profits may assist clients with low fee or free legal representation for divorce. I did this. I just kept asking, and if they couldn't help I asked for referrals. I finally found one who was just out of law school who took me on. [ Reply | More ]

You do realize that a lawyer just out of law school has never handled a divorce and knows hardly any more than you do? [ Reply | More ]

Pro Bono is short for the phrase “ Pro Bono Publico” Latin for “ For the Good of the Public”. It generally refers to legal work done without charge on causes that affect the public, like environmental issues, free speech, civil rights in a community, etc. What you are looking for is a lawyer who for some reason ( such as, s/he is new, has no clients and is hoping you will be able to pay something at some point) is willing to give you his time for free rather than charging you for it. Calling law firms asking for free legal representation is like calling doctors randomly asking if they will treat you without charge. Clinics exist for that purpose and someone may refer you, but a random medical practice doesn’t do this. Individual doctors may volunteer many hours of their medical services through organizations or causes that they choose, but not generally as a result of a random request from an individual calling the office. It will be hard to find a lawyer to handle your divorce for free. Just as hard as finding a plumber to fix your pipes for free. [ Reply | More ]

Some posters above gave you the best advice - call your local bar association. The NYS has association, the NYCounty Lawyers’ Assn, even the American bar assn, a national group. They’ll all direct you either to a roll of pro bono lawyers, or to their matrimonial sections, where pro bono help can be found. Don’t call law firms. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

No they won’t, no such thing as a “ roll of pro bono lawyers” willing to represent a random individual in a divorce who just wants to save a few $$. [ Reply | More ]

Most legal aid agencies don’t handle divorce, because they are relatively inexpensive and you can also divorce pro se. if you are a victim of DV, you should reach out to your local DV services agency- they may have legal resources. [ Reply | More ]
