New York State law permits breastfeeding in public as long as (a) you are not blocking other people's way (no sitting in front of the escalator, in the middle of the shopping aisle or in front of a fire door) and (b) you are legally permitted to be there in the first place (no marching into a stockroom or back office). Only 1 onsite for district programs, but there were also onsites for all of the citywide programs, and dc could conceivably get into all the schools/programs where you applied. Nothing's perfect. The could always introduce gender balance into the lotter y process. On sites aren't the only way to secure a gender balance. as someone whose child was accepted a few years ago at anderson under the old SB/onsite system (having scored a 99 on SB5) off of the WL very late in the process, and whose kid is doing extraordinarily well there, i sometimes think how lucky we were to get in at all -- dc very nearly didn't. however, i still think the onsite is the best way to balance a class -- it's not and shouldn't be only about scores -- it's about personality and other factors (including racial and geographic diversity) that scores alone can't qualify. i'm in favor of onsites. NP: We just got into Anderson (1st year without onsites), but I am in favor of onsites also. Access to citywides should be primarily about aptitude. But it's also important that extraordinary kids who might not otherwise have a really good alternative to Anderson should get an opportunity at the Anderson education. That's the kind of kid that the onsite could have reached, but scores/lottery alone just will not. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think so. We have seen enough apartments over the years, have heard enough about the vacations people take, renovations they made and summer places they have, the expensive camps and afterschool activities they send their kids to. Could not be done on $40K year, or even $200K in most cases. I am not saying there are no kids like that there but it's a small minority. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think the gender balance issue is a surprise at all. The 36/14 is about what Hunter 2nd rounds were. Generally girls do outscore boys 2:1 in the early years. All of the G&Ts are going to be girl heavy. [ Reply | More ]

At last year's LL talent show, the boys (who were in the minority) did a skit about it. Since boys by 1st or 2nd tend to socialize mostly with other boys, it's probably somewhat limiting for them, but probably makes for a quieter class? I have a boy, wouldn't mind if he was in a girl-heavy class at all, but he would probably hate it. [ Reply | More ]

Most teachers I've talked to do NOT want another pair of hands in the room full time. It's a lot of extra work for the teacher -- time I'd rather she spend working for our children. np: i am a new nest mom and the class size there is larger than at our zoned public - however, those classrooms were the most well managed I saw of ALL the schools I visited and I went to a lot! it never really bothered me that there are not assistant teachers or a few more kids when they seem to have such a handle on it. The issue of an assistant's qualifications is a real one also...you may get the 'b' level teachers (or not even teachers) who can't get a job elsewhere and will do it for little money. imo not necessary. It's to prevent cross-border kidnappings. The airlines/immigrations do not always ask to see the letter, but if they do ask, and it's not there, they will not permit the child to board the plane or enter the country. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I have to disagree. I have a friend who emigrated here from India. She and her husband are not rich by any standard, but they earn enough to pay the rent, support themselves and their son, and send money to India. They work multiple jobs and the education that their son is getting at a public school is far superior to what he was getting in India. So in this case, the city is for them a means to improve their lives and the lives of their family. [ Reply | More ]

I think you also have to take the good with the bad and take responsibility for your decisions. We moved back to NYC last year and agonized over WHERE to move - assumed we would end up in brooklyn but after researching schools for almost a year landed back in manhattan - largely because i wanted dc to take advantage of g/t at the citywides if he got in; i always felt he belonged there and seemed like such a great opportunity. Personally we would not make the commute from another borough - our rent is atrocious - but this is what we have chosen...and dc did get into our first choice city wide and we couldn't be happier. There are crazy processes in cities all of the country too...so you could end up going through some kind of bs no matter where you live. [ Reply | More ]

My Forest Hills public school is far superior to the private Manhattan kindergarten I enrolled my dc in two years ago. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] I received a letter yesterday telling me that my Ob/Gyn (Vanessa Dinnall) is leaving the practice and her patients will be taken over by Dr. Lily Hanna. I just called to make an appointment with Dr. Hanna since I am planning to start TTC before the end of the year, and the woman I spoke to said I couldn't see her until November because that was when my last annual was. 16 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

^^ I just want to meet this doctor! Has anyone else had an experience like this (this is with the Moritz/Jew practice at St. Luke's Roosevelt), or does anyone know anything about Dr. Hanna? [ Reply | More ]

She was the Dr. on call when I had my DD at SLR in 2003--she was lovely, very nice. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for responding. This will be my first, so I'm kind of nervous about the doctor, and I have been seeing Dr. Dinnall for several years and really liked her. Hope I like Dr. Hanna too! [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I've heard mostly good things from friends who've delivered there, so I'm happy with that. [ Reply | More ]

I've never heard of a doctors office refusing to give you an appointment [ Reply | More ]

I hadn't either - they said that I couldn't have an appointment until a year after my last one, unless I was pregnant and it was for something else. I finally managed to get someone else to give me an appointment to meet with the doctor, but not for an exam. [ Reply | More ]

Dinnall is leaving? That is so disappointing. She's like a midwife. [ Reply | More ]

I know, I am really sad. I had a great rappore with her and she was experienced with my possible pg complications (Crohn's) [ Reply | More ]

I would really make sure this Dr. Hanna has the same type of philosophy. Otherwise, I'd switch out. [ Reply | More ]

I have a great Dr. Dr. Ephraim Ovitsch. He delivers at St. Vincents. I would recommend him to anyone. He will give you an appointment usually the same week. He really takes the time to listen to you. [ Reply | More ]

Though I am not pg, I have met with Dr. Hanna for GYN exams. I fear she is not thorough enough and seems very lax about diagnosing symptoms. She also seems narrow minded about her chosen treatments, and was dismissive of my requests for more natural treatments without hormones. If you are looking for a more conservative treatment, I'd go elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]
