I have used this device called a Stress Eraser. It's like a combo of biofeedback and meditation. It has really worked. I have a hard time "meditating" without it. Need that feedback and structure. Google it for more info. Interesting device. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with this, with one caveat. Until and unless they figure out how to teach every student at their level (tracking/leveling, or differentiated instruction within the classroom), a really exclusive G&T program structure will not meet the needs of the strongest students. The problem is that class sizes/teacher:student ratios are too large to teach to all children's levels. [ Reply | More ]

and this is the problem with school in general, no matter how much they tweak it. when you put different kids in a classroom, it is inevitable that students will have different learning styles, or will encounter difficulties with the system somewhere along the line. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, there will be mixed abilities in most classrooms. But one can't argue that a smaller teacher:student ratio will allow for better tailoring of instruction and attention according to the students ability. This can be tweaked to some extent. [ Reply | More ]

np: ITTTA. Throwing more $ to fix schools means, not more training for teachers, but more $ to attract the best and best educated teachers. It also means more $ for smaller class sizes. This is a basic and obvious problem that does not seem to have been addressed with all of the NCLB garbage. [ Reply | More ]

It was great. I'm so impressed by Brady and PTA. I'm a little disappointed we didn't learn more about G&T program though(and figure out who will be in our DD's class next year so we could set up playdates over the summer), but I guess that's for another time. Much better than orientation we had been to at zoned school. Very little diversity, however. [ Reply | More ]

I think the relative lack of gen ed diversity at the orientation wasn't quite reflective of what will be the actual make up of the class. It's very likely that many local families of color who live in the neighborhood didn't come. They may have a sib there already or they couldn't take off from work. Also, there are always a few local gen ed registrants who just walk in over the summer or at the start of school. [ Reply | More ]

It's smart she didn't do that at the orientation. There's enough "my child is the next Hawking" hysteria already - no need for her to feed it. The curriculum for G&T and Gen Ed are exactly the same. [ Reply | More ]
