[ - ] Very grateful to have the option, but am torturing myself and DH over where to send DC for K. Should we stick with plan to send DC to our (decent) accepted private or send her to PS 11? We can afford private, but I run my own biz, am the breadwinner and always worry about $$$. Liked 11, but not overwhelmed. She'll probably be fine either way. WWYD? If we opt for 11, will we have more trouble getting her into a good private or T&G after 5th grade? 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Make a list -- I'm serious and did this last year. What's really important to you (small class size? extras? saving $? more diverse population? etc.) List positives and negatives of each option. We ended up going with private over very good G&T, but it took me a while to get there and seeing the issues on paper really helped. [ Reply | More ]

Unless your dc really needs extra attention or can't handle the more rigorous academic curriculum in the early elem years, I would definitely do 11. Why on earth would you pay 30K a year at the elementary level for more coddling and less learning? I'm not saying taking it easy at a younger age is bad, and as an 11 parent myself I sometimes think they ask a bit much of the kids at a young age, but I cannot imagine shelling out 30K a year for private school when 11 is just fine, and even moreso if it would be a financial struggle. Your dc is obviously bright if he made the olsat cutoff and who knows, she could end up going to a great public middle school too - think of all the money you'll save [ Reply | More ]

G&T and gen ed in public school is more academic than private schools. Private schools start out slow and ramp it up in 3rd grade. I was commenting on the difference btwn public and private. That said, the G&T programs in the past followed the same curriculum as gen ed but now starting with this fall's K, they are saying the G&Ts are going to accelerated to some extent. Hence the big deal they made of making a strict cutoff whereas last year kids with scores below 90 got in if there were seats left. [ Reply | More ]

np: 30K a year can buy a lot of enrichment outside of the school setting as well (I am thinking weeks in paris, galapagos, etc). I also run my own business and 'could' afford private, but am so happy not to have to because of our G&T program. And a lot can happen between now and middle school. I'd say go PS11. [ Reply | More ]

I'm nearly your age (42), but my children are younger and I spent more time in the workforce than you did before staying home with them. I seriously doubt you can find any paid work that fills you with such a strong sense of purpose and meaning. Only parenting can do that. Chris Rock said it was the only job where he knew he was doing the right thing. So true! But you (and I) are young still. You can find paid work that you enjoy and makes a contribution to be proud of. You have a good twenty to twenty-five years of working life left! If you can afford a career counselor, hire one. But if you can't, start talking to friends, bosses & co-workers. They will help you understand the strengths and skills you have and maybe point you in a happy direction. Good luck! [ Reply | More ]

The current admissions process which heavily favors siblings will not likely be changed. Bloomberg will be gone and a new administration would not make politically unpopular changes. Siblings need only achieve the low end of the range to get preference. That's 97 for citywide and 90 for district programs. That's an enormous advantage, especially for the district programs where you see 98s required to get a spot. [ Reply | More ]

Granted. But have you actually seen evidence that this was an issue? Everybody said it was going to be totally unfair at NEST this year, because you had all these kids who got in in previous years when it was easy and then this year, their siblings were going to fill up the Kindergarten. The reality is that very few siblings got in. I've been paying attention and I only know of one. So, I am wondering -- have you any actual knowledge of a school where this happened? [ Reply | More ]

Any luck? I've heard of new mom clubs meeting up at certain parks at certain times depending on the age of your child. I'm a new mom on the UES (dc is 1 mth) and I've been having a hard time connecting with other moms. None of my friends have children. I'm thinking of signing up for a couple classes at kidville, but that won't start until the fall. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Anyone here in the PTA at Anderson? Is there an opportunity for the new K parents to get involved? Have elections already taken place for next year? Sorry to seem too eager, but just very excited to get involved! 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes there is lots of opportunity to get involved. Elections have taken place and I'm not sure if they hold certain spots for K parents. It is helpful to become involved right off the bat in K because you get to see a little more of what is going in the class amd potentially a little more contact with the teacher. [ Reply | More ]

I'm on the PTA and say "welcome!" It's really great to have K parents who are willing to jump right in. Please don't be shy. As a group who've been together a long time, we can look too busy to pay attention. But please, just butt right in. You'll get a very warm reception! And again, thanks!!! [ Reply | More ]

I am an Anderson parent. There is definitely tons of opportunity for new K parents to get involved in the PTA and the school--there are all kind of events and the PTA is always looking for volunteers. Elections have taken place for things like PTA president, but there is still plenty of opportunity. And, welcome! [ Reply | More ]
