[ - ] Looking for vacation ideas - late Sept. for a week with dh and 3yo and 5yo ds'. Not too expensive, within a 6 hr drive from NYC. Maybe Montreal or Maine but looking for other ideas - as specific as possible. Thanks! 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

september is great on cape cod or nantucket ( and i think it;s true for most of new england), but beware of too many retirees. they take revenge that they can't come in summer, and in usually kid-friendly places they get annoyed if kids make noice. but if you don't mind old people (like i do, lived in Naples, Fl - allergic to entitled retirees)- it's so pleasant [ Reply | More ]

it's her job. any affection she has for your family is besides the point. Would you leave your job that you loved for a 20% pay raise? If it meant a better school or life for your kids? and extra $100 a week is a lot to many working people. [ Reply | More ]

yes, and that extra $100 means a lot to me and my family as well. i dont make very much money and the only reason im going back to work is so we have health care and the rest of my salary is going to the nanny. i wish i could do daycare but i cant make the hours. [ Reply | More ]

I sympathize, and it sucks that she's put you in this situation. But if you would fight for and/or leave for a 20% raise, then don't blame her for doing so. Your family is lovely, I'm sure (no sarcasm, really!) but you're not a nonprofit. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

i agree, i dont blame anyone for trying to make a living. what upsets me is being led to believe one thing and then she does another and has made this all very stressful for my family. that is what upsets me the most. and when we discussed this for the 3rd time today, i dont want to be told again i'll think about it, if you make a demand, then live with the result. i dont appreciate being played around with, especially when it involves my son. thats all im saying. and thank you for the sympathy, i do appreciate it. like i said, just need to vent. everyone who is carrying on about the going rate must be nannies or something. I feel very badly for OP -- they had an agreement when she was hired. It doesn't matter what the specifics were. The nanny is now emotionally blackmailing the OP. NO on here can accept a job offer then a couple of months into the job demand a 20 percent higher salary. Come on! To the OP: I know it's hard because it's your db, but I think you need to start looking around for a more reliable, trustworthy nanny. [ Reply | More ]

And after, yes. I'd gone off prozac when ttc because of course ideally you're not taking anything. But I found I really needed it, and weighed the pros (having a sane mom) against the cons (I don't remember them but there were a few, albeit unproven at the time) and figured I'd be a crappy mom if I went off. It all worked out--my girls were in great health, not agitated or underweight or any of that. [ Reply | More ]

If I'm remembering correctly, there was data on zoloft not showing up in breast milk as much, and I think there wasn't data on prozac...I can't remember. the big one was a second trimester miscarriage that really hit me harder than i thought it would. (not that i ever gave it much thought at all until it happened to me). [ Reply | More ]

op: yes, i thought so. but some relatives are going through serious ongoing medical issues (one has cancer) and so this sort of pales. [ Reply | More ]

OK, to be honest... I think the miscarriage is a serious issue, but I've gotta say, I wouldn't complain about it to someone with cancer [ Reply | More ]

OP, don't reveal! Doesn't matter what your problems are and put 'em out here and someone will surely minimize them. Whatever they are, sorry for your troubles. [ Reply | More ]

no, it's not them. i mean, it's a little insensitive but it's the kind of thing i'd say to myself. it's just not so nice hearing it from other people. and plus, i feel stupid crying on their shoulder about my problems when they are dealing with other family/friends that have current problems. Honestly, not petty to worry about your own problems, even if they are not as serious as others. Just because they aren't the worst doesn't make them not worry-worthy. [ Reply | More ]

^^^and i feel petty about it b/c i agree with them. and i'd say the same things to myself. but the fact that other people are saying it is what is bothering me. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Still so sad about Tim Russert. Will be glad to have the endless memorials over and done with. We used to see him riding around in his jeep on Nantucket and will miss seeing that. It was a happy sight. 4 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

can you go without a trim in an apartment? Or is there something in lieu of a trim that could be used to avoid damage to the wall without installing a baseboard? Tia [ Reply | More ]

why don't you want to install a baseboard? You could use a very thin strip of vinyl or leather but it should be about 4" high. [ Reply | More ]

mainly because I don't like the look of it! But have to confess to not having fully investigated modern/clean/minimalist options. Everything I've seen so far is conspicuous, if that makes any sense. Also, why is it at least 4" high? Tia [ Reply | More ]

baseboard exists for a reason - covered w/oil based paint to easily clean our occasional foot scuffs & mopping stains. i worked in a firm that didn't use them and you could see the scuffed evidence everywhere along edge of floor, impossible to clean. if you don't like the traditional look, try a recessed board w/a thin reveal (although that's where your dust will gather and be impossible to clean without a q-tip).
