[ - ] How on earth would one be able to prove a scoring error on the BSRA/OLSAT? We requested to see DD's sheet only b/c it appears she didn't answer a single question on a subtest but have no intention of requesting a retest. But people here are saying if you can prove there was an error in scoring (which we know we don't have a case for) you can request retesting. 15 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

maybe they rescore it in front of you when you go to see it. N. Rosen will be my chaperone when I go. While I am there I think I may slip into the OSEPO office b/c they won't answer my calls or email re where the hell my letter is! Think civil disobedience. [ Reply | More ]

Good luck with that! :) I want to know if we can learn how children who also tested with our tester faired. She seemed terrible from the little I saw of her and what DD told me. Every single tester at our site walked the child back to his/her parents. Ours literally screamed out "Blah blah's Parents????? Your child is done." and walked away leaving DD to find me on her own. She also told DD it was ok to skip a question if she was unsure when we had told her to try her best and give an answer anyway. Who tells a child to skip? I can't imagine that was part of the "training" the testers received. [ Reply | More ]

^OH - and some sort of bell or buzzer went off for about 2-3 minutes while DD was taking her test. Almost like the type of buzzer signifying the change of classes in a middle school and DD said "the noise bothered me." Thank goodness we had other options! [ Reply | More ]

np: I don't think these are grounds for a re-test. If a test was lost or swapped in error, then yes. simple distractions during the course of the test are to be expected. also, instructors are told that if a dc is struggling and not able to choose a response after a period of time, then they can tell the dc its ok to skip. if they don't do that, the kid might get so anxious that it will affect their ability to perform on subsequent items. simple test taking skills. if you don't know, move on. signed olsat tester. Perhaps not, but I would still have requested a retest, making my argument. In fact, we did do this and were granted a retest. The DOE did actually investigate (spoke to the tester, I believe) and granted our request [ Reply | More ]

The official policy was that children were given the option to bubble if they wanted. DD told us she wasn't given a choice, and that she had to bubble all 40 questions. She was wiped out by the end. They investigated and agreed that she shouldn't have been asked to bubble. [ Reply | More ]

^^ But to add, we did follow official policy and appeal for a retest within 48 hours of the test. We didn't try to have them bend the rules or anything, we just laid out our case respectfully [ Reply | More ]

No. It really didn't occur to us that we could have - especially since this all happened on the last day of testing. And, for the OLSAT tester below - clearly this tester influenced my child to skip b/c she was out in 30 minutes. The first to come out. Something was fishy is all I am saying and I don't trust the DOE to adequately train testers anyway. To have anyone buy psychologists administering tests like these is ludicrous. [ Reply | More ]

It's easy from the outside to think private school is the reward children get for being smart and well-behaved, but it's really more about the parents' ability to pay and other factors beyond your control. [ - ] Ok, stupid question, but seriously: What do you do with all of the junk toys, you know the ones that aren't part of a set and dont really belong anywhere. Party favors, McDonald's toys, etc. I have a 4yo and 2yo and the house is seriously overrun with toys...I need help. 12 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

yes, but then what kind of help do you need? maybe you can tell him that the toys went to children who need them or something? if your house is overrun, they just have to go [ Reply | More ]

I put them in a box. They can take out the box and play with them. If they haven't played with them in a year or so, in the trash or donated to charity they go. [ Reply | More ]

I throw stuff out and admittedly tell my older ds that I don't know where it is when he asks. [ Reply | More ]

LOL! I do that, too! Also have those huge Ikea drawers in our playroom and both DC have a designated "junk drawer" for little toys like that. [ Reply | More ]

Two options: 1) remove under cover of darkness and play dumb. 2) Teach DCs that some kids have fewer toys than they have and it's time to donate. We do a combo of both. :) [ Reply | More ]

np - PS 9 and PS 87 are pretty close to each other, if you're thinking about 2 kids at 2 different schools. [ Reply | More ]

i would do ps9. If you don't like it, you can always switch to 87, assuming you live in the zone. If you give you 9 now, that's it most likely for that opportunity. [ Reply | More ]

You & I are in the same boat. I'm zoned for 199 with younger sib and on the fence. I guess we'll sort it out after we feel out the vibe at the picnic tomorrow...We also have DD and seems (at least from this board) it's heavy on DD's -- a good thing for my [shy] DD at least. [ Reply | More ]

That's a lot of pressure to put on a picnic. I would think you would focus more on what you see in the classroom. [ Reply | More ]

The disparity b/w the 3 programs at 9 is an underlying cause for problems at the school. Plus, 87 is as high scoring as 9 and has the option of dual language. I don't know a single family unhappy with 87 and the "x" factor of the sibling having to test into 9 is a big risk. You disagree because...? [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, we researched 87 very thoroughly and all the familes are close to ecstatic about it. Got pluses and minuses about all the other schools we asked about, but only pluses about 87. We're thrilled to be going there next year. [ Reply | More ]

I actually know a family with big minuses about 87. But this is a family with another child at Hunter so their basis for comparison is very different. [ Reply | More ]

PS87 if you got in from lottery. Amazing school, and a bigger population than the 9 G&T. More activities and other features. At 9 your kid will be with the same kids for 6 years. I did that in elementary and it was not a good thing. If you're zoned for 87, then you can always try 9 first and switch. [ Reply | More ]
