It's so hard for me to stop being bitter about being shut out of the privates for this fall. I swallow it when talking to all the friends we have going to the privates, but it really burns me up inside. My DS is, in my humble opinion, so bright, curious and kind. It's crazy to me that we only got a handful of waitlists and that none of the lists moved 1 iota. :( [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i'm sorry; it seems unfair. i'll bet you'll look back on these days and laugh when your child does really well wherever he goes. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, try to remember that 3100 dc took the test for 2400 spots. Many many very bright, nice dc from nice families got SO. Is he on the younger side, can you try next year? I am sure that dc will be fine. [ Reply | More ]

THank you both. It's what I keep telling myself... where he goes to K is so unimportant. He is actually on the older side, making this all the more crazy. His ERBs were just OK (80) - he's very verbal but not the most willing "performer" of tasks in uncomfortable settings and that's what I think made all the difference. [ Reply | More ]

That is why testing four year olds s*cks. Some kids are very shy in new situations and this test, therefore, "shuts out" many bright dc. [ Reply | More ]

Just because a child is shy around a stranger does not mean that child is not cooperative. [ Reply | More ]

Sometimes an 80 is an 80. Amazing how EVERYONE has a 98 or 99 kid who won't "perform". [ Reply | More ]

That's what you get for having friends whose kids all go to private school. You need some public school friends! [ Reply | More ]

i like you, too. it's so hard to judge a 4yo by his or her cover. there was a boy in my DS's nursery school -- everyone knew "jake." he was a total nightmare -- almost got kicked out, etc. and you know what? now, he's in kindergarten, and according to another friend, he has morphed into a delightful child. i think it's so hard to predict these things. anyone who thinks they know your kid by a couple of tests and child studies is wrong... hope you find a good place for DS where the both of you are happy with. It's easy from the outside to think private school is the reward children get for being smart and well-behaved, but it's really more about the parents' ability to pay and other factors beyond your control. A private school teacher once told me that his school chose students based on their parents professions, looking to spread their financial risk beyond any one particular industry. [ Reply | More ]

Right. In terms of parents not being pitas. They're looking at the kid and confirming erb at those "playdates"; they're not social calls. [ Reply | More ]
