OP, and my only guess is that she lives in way northern Manhattan, outside the 5.5 mile limit. I hope she doesn't mean there aren't any cross-district buses again next year. [ Reply | More ]

I live in northern Manhattan and we're going to Anderson, which is why I'm a little concerned. DH asked Donna Smiley about the bus to our area during the tour in May, and she confirmed it was available. But now I'm hearing this about Nest and wondering if there is some new rule that they decided to institute. [ Reply | More ]

Nope. NEST sounds like their just lazy and don't want to do the paperwork that Anderson always prepares for its students - mostly because A identifies as bringing together students from a diverse geographic slate rather than NEST that wanted to be a local school, but got labelled "citywide" for bureaucratic reasons. NEST never wanted to be a local school - it fought that from day one. It was the LOCALS who wanted a local school, and thought they were being promised one [ Reply | More ]

Maybe that's what the parents wanted, but the current principal has made it clear that the less she has to do, the better. She didn't want to have any part in admissions and she doesn't want any hassle in arranging busing. My BF is there and likes the classroom activity but can't stand the administration's attitude and laziness. [ Reply | More ]

Not to defend them too much (esp. since I hated the principal at OH) but 1) I think it's kind of healthy for them not to want to deal with admissions. Not a bad thing to devote their limited time/resources to the curriculum, assuming that the DOE will send smart kids their way, and 2) I don't think busing was ever really up to them. There was no cross-district busing until midyear last year for ANY of the citywides. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson always had cross-district busing. For at least 18 years, probably 20. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe private busing, but def. not public free busing - they very specifically said that at the OH last year. You could prob. search this bd and see all the posts about it in the fall [ Reply | More ]

You are talking about cross-borough which is a different thing. cross-district has always been available, kids from UES were bused to UWS. Kids from Bronx or Queens were not. [ Reply | More ]

np: The NEST principal took a stand. She was against the onsites. Her position was that the they allowed for too much abuse (considering the NEST history -- this was a reasoned position.) So she said, we don't need to select for personality, etc. Give us the smartest kids and we will educate them. Anderson had a history of busing which was grandfathered in when the DOE changed the rules. NEST is too new for this so they were stuck. This is my understanding of why the discrepancy. Why wouldn't they? They are entitled to busing within 5 miles and within Manhattan. They must have at least 11 kids between the school and UWS for the Office of Pupil Transportation to create a route. It's ridiculous. [ Reply | More ]

PS 187 is the public school up here that is the most highly regarded. There are several very good charter schools, but they tend to be located closer to Inwood (space issues): Amistad, Muscota and Washington Heights Academy (which is moving up to Inwood in 1 year). That's about it. [ Reply | More ]

Whether Amistad or Muscota is a "very good" school is up in the air. Muscota failed its last city review and has a lot of internal problems. Amistad is great academically, but it is dual language, and can be very rigid. Both are housed in a building with other schools, so they have very limited space, no rooms for specialized classes, and share dropoff, pickup, recess, etc. with kids from other programs. We actually left our big beautiful apartment in Inwood because of the poor school choices, moved to D3. [ Reply | More ]

I had my ds in a home daycare for a few months. If it is licensed and/or you are comfortable with the ratio of kids to adults, I think it is a great option for an infant. Around the age of 2, I would prefer more of a structured learning environment which you can get in a regular daycare setting [ Reply | More ]
