Anyone live in Washington Heights? What do you do for school? Have a great apt and a 7 mo and wondering what we will do for school (praying for charter and assuming private) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm the poster below. You are not in 187 zone, but you are probably within the zone of PS 153, which has a good arts enrichment and gifted & talented program. The general education school at PS 153 is not very strong, but their 2 specialized programs are up & coming. [ Reply | More ]

I've heard good things about the special programs at ps 153. Unfortunately, there is very little diversity though. [ Reply | More ]

PS 187 is the public school up here that is the most highly regarded. There are several very good charter schools, but they tend to be located closer to Inwood (space issues): Amistad, Muscota and Washington Heights Academy (which is moving up to Inwood in 1 year). That's about it. [ Reply | More ]

Hamilton Heights Academy is located near you. It is a lottery school for residents of District 6 (your district) with heavy parent involvement. It's easy to get into now, not sure what it will be like in 5 years. [ Reply | More ]

Heard great things about HHA and 187, good things about Amistad and WHA, not good things about Muscota and the other publics. [ Reply | More ]

Whether Amistad or Muscota is a "very good" school is up in the air. Muscota failed its last city review and has a lot of internal problems. Amistad is great academically, but it is dual language, and can be very rigid. Both are housed in a building with other schools, so they have very limited space, no rooms for specialized classes, and share dropoff, pickup, recess, etc. with kids from other programs. We actually left our big beautiful apartment in Inwood because of the poor school choices, moved to D3. [ Reply | More ]

One more thought -- you should join the Washington Heights Yahoo group. Search for the Yahoo Group called PARENTANDME1. That's lots of chatter of schools, plus other great info. [ Reply | More ]
