not a textbook exactly, but the "Easy Way" series, eg "Algebra the Easy Way". I'm dyslexic and had a horrible time making out school textbooks, but I'm also gifted in math, and this is how I learned algebra through calculus. [ Reply | More ]

Depends on why DC is crying! #1 is a tough cookie and usually only cried when truly upset (or sorry for misbehaving). #2 is sometimes a crier and although I do often hold her and comfort her, there are times that I "ignore" her tears (I make sure that she's okay, but I don't give her a snuggle right then). thanks. helpful. i think i usually am mostly comforting when it comes to dd feeling bad when she is misbehaving. she is scared by that (she bit me today and i yelped and then she cried). when she falls, i don;t hug much, a pat on the back, "i see that you are hurt, the pain is temporary and will soon stop". and don't do much when she cries when she does not get something she wants. i just say, 'i am sorry. you are welcome to cry, but i can't pick you up right now." i just feel like i don't hug a lot whne she is crying. yes, when she is not. Glad to help! :) I was a nursery school teacher for many years, so I am a little "hardened" about tears. My DC are both snugglers and lap sitters and get plenty of that -- but I try to balance it with independence and resiliency. [ Reply | More ]

DC are 2-and-1/2 years apart. Honestly, I didn't love the split at first -- #1 was old enough to notice the disruption in his life, but still too young to have his "own" world. Things are great now -- DC are 6 and 3-and-1/2 and it's nice, they can play together (sort of!), but also have their own interests (and, logistically it works -- they are on different schedules and have time together and apart). [ - ] Most common reason you fight with dh? Me: DH constantly complains he doesn't have enough free time when he comes home from work and on weekends to do what he wants to get done (admittedly puttering around the house and looking for a new job) but I need him to help with two small children. Just curious what other couples fight over. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm compulsive and super organized (it's a ploy to keep my inner slob at bay) and DH doesn't hang up his coat or put his clothes away and he lounges around and and leaves crumbs everywhere and it makes me crazy. He doesn't do it to be a jerk, he just doesn't "get" it. I know that this is little stuff, but I sometimes snap over it. [ Reply | More ]

I could have written what you wrote. We have the exact same disagreement - the resolution: I'll take kids to bday parties (which he hates) - gives him time to go to gym, look for new job, fix things around the house. [ Reply | More ]

I think that should be fine. ERBs are a part of a larger picture, and I think they've been made less important by the prepping some parents do. The child's visit and the school report are more important. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, people have posted scores in the 80s for non-sibling, non-connected children getting into Brearley and Chapin. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ The book The Overachievers includes an observation of a playdate/child interview for Trinity and mentions how tangentially ERB testing plays into this. Some UB posters are crazy about parsing scores (perhaps because it's one the quantifiable factor in a sea of more indefinite ones), but the schools have professional educators who look for a variety of bright kids and families. Your child is obviously bright. [ Reply | More ]

Low for tt. HM and Spence unlikely to look at such a score UNLESS you have major connections and/or $$$$. Chances not much better at the other 5. Know plenty of 98s and 99s at 2nd tier. All the tt kids I know were 98s and 99s, too. The kids with lower scores ended up at Dwight and CGPS. [ Reply | More ]

just went through the process with dc who had a 94. PSD said that of all the schools, it would be an issue for Dalton (and she was right; felt we were rejected before Dalton even met us or dc). dc didn't get into the other 2 TTs we applied to, but is going to a great 2nd tier private.
