Who else is a little shell shocked by this year's G&T ordeal, and a little freaked out when thinking about repeating this in a few years with younger sibling? I don't take much comfort in the new sibling policy, since it's obvious the rules change year to year. Happy with our placement, but not looking forward to reliving the anxiety and uncertainty with our second dc. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm sure it will be an ordeal. But I've got to recover from this year first. [ Reply | More ]

whatever - i don't choose to see myself as a victom - it is our choice to live here - it is our choice to try to avoid private school, etc. [ Reply | More ]

OP: No victimhood here. We got our first choice. But not looking forward to navigating this again in the near future. [ Reply | More ]

Excuse me. In what way was this years process hard to navigate? What did you have to do that turned this process into an ordeal? [ Reply | More ]

OP: If you thought it was a breezy, happy experience, I might ask what drugs you were on, but never mind. You're entitled to your opinion, I to mine. I'm not going to argue with you. [ Reply | More ]

Wow. Do I have to deal with moms like you starting fall? This is scary. [ Reply | More ]

They are changing an ancient and unfair system and trying to make it fair. All things considered, they did a decent job. It was different last year. It will be different again next year. Eventually (and soon) it will be old hat. Then everyone will forget about what the parents of the 08-09 and 09-10 K classes went through. [ Reply | More ]

The current admissions process which heavily favors siblings will not likely be changed. Bloomberg will be gone and a new administration would not make politically unpopular changes. You can see how they waited until after Bloomberg was reelected before they even touched G&T. And no, they did not make it better, they made it much worse. [ Reply | More ]

Heavily? Do you have any facts behind this? I keep hearing this but if you look at the survey's here, the number of sibs at the citiwides is insignificant. [ Reply | More ]

Siblings need only achieve the low end of the range to get preference. That's 97 for citywide and 90 for district programs. That's an enormous advantage, especially for the district programs where you see 98s required to get a spot. [ Reply | More ]

Granted. But have you actually seen evidence that this was an issue? Everybody said it was going to be totally unfair at NEST this year, because you had all these kids who got in in previous years when it was easy and then this year, their siblings were going to fill up the Kindergarten. The reality is that very few siblings got in. I've been paying attention and I only know of one. So, I am wondering -- have you any actual knowledge of a school where this happened? [ Reply | More ]

First of all, you volunteered to go through this "ordeal". Secondly, how was this an ordeal in the first place? Kid took test, you ranked schools, you got a placement - it could hardly be any easier than that. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Did you participate this year? Yes, it was voluntary, but that is irrelevant to the issue of how poorly this process has been managed/designed. We're all just trying to get the best education we can for our kids. When private is not an option, you turn to G&T. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I participated. Turning to G&T because you hate the zoned school is NOT the right thing to do. That is not the purpose of a gifted and talented school. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Actually, our zoned school is okay. It's not terrible and it's not great either. [ Reply | More ]

This doesn't answer the question why this year's process was an ordeal. Because the competition was so fierce that nothing was guaranteed for your oh so smart child? [ Reply | More ]

np: there is a subculture at UB which thinks everything done by Klein/DOE is wrong. No matter what. They ignore how huge the NYC DOE is. (If, on a school day, the DOE were a state -- it would be larger than eight states in the US.) [ Reply | More ]

Are they DOE hostile? I watched Klein on NY1 a week or two ago. He seemed like a decent guy and I have to say, although it works against my family, I like what he is doing with the G&T program in NYC. [ Reply | More ]
