Just for the record, it was PS9 orientation. All incoming K kids, most of whom will be going to gen ed. [ Reply | More ]

And, just for the record, it was less diverse than I would have imagined based on the write-up in InsideSchools. [ Reply | More ]

How diverse was the attendance at this event? [ Reply | More ]

Not very. I would say 85-90% caucasion (including gen ed and G&T) [ Reply | More ]

That must have been just orientation. The classes are definitely more diverse than that, even G&T, and most definitely gen ed. [ Reply | More ]

actually, the gen ed has become whiter and whiter. seems the whole school is fairly white and MC now, including anderson [ Reply | More ]

Not Anderson. You didn't see Anderson there. Last few years, Anderson has been 40-60% white. [ Reply | More ]

And likely only getting whiter given the whole lottery thing [ Reply | More ]

That's absurd. Just go by the yard at pick up or drop off. It's very diverse. [ Reply | More ]

It was great. I'm so impressed by Brady and PTA. I'm a little disappointed we didn't learn more about G&T program though(and figure out who will be in our DD's class next year so we could set up playdates over the summer), but I guess that's for another time. Much better than orientation we had been to at zoned school. Very little diversity, however. [ Reply | More ]

I think the relative lack of gen ed diversity at the orientation wasn't quite reflective of what will be the actual make up of the class. It's very likely that many local families of color who live in the neighborhood didn't come. They may have a sib there already or they couldn't take off from work. Also, there are always a few local gen ed registrants who just walk in over the summer or at the start of school. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you. I hope it's more diverse - that's what living in NYC is supposed to be about! [ Reply | More ]

The gen ed classes at PS9 have really been diverse last couple of years. They used to be almost all minority kids but now there is actually a very good balance of all ethnicities there. [ Reply | More ]

Brady is very anti-G&T, so you won't hear them talk about G&T separately. [ Reply | More ]

It's smart she didn't do that at the orientation. There's enough "my child is the next Hawking" hysteria already - no need for her to feed it. The curriculum for G&T and Gen Ed are exactly the same. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a G&T mom and I think Brady is great. Of course the curriculum is the same... although pace and depth may be different. Why should she talk about them separately? [ Reply | More ]

Of course she should not at orientation, but I do wish she would consider altering the G&T curriculum, particularly in math which is very underwhelming. [ Reply | More ]

Diane Brady will never talk about the G&T program separately. She's all about fairness and equality for all kids at the school. [ Reply | More ]

And that is the way it should be. As a G&T mom - I don't want my kid to think they are any different than anybody else, and certainly not any better. I just want their class to learn at their own pace... [ Reply | More ]

I agree. That's why we enrolled our g&t kid into a gen ed school w/o a g&t program. He is very self-motivated. If he doesn't get enough challenges, I will address it with his teacher in the fall. [ Reply | More ]
