New NEST moms. Should we try right away to raise funding for assistant teacher in the room? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

First of all, you cannot earmark funding for staff. Work with your PTA and see how you can figure out fund allocations. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure the logistics are complicated. Just figuring that it would probably something a lot of parents would be interested in giving money for. So many other schools (G&T and zoned) do it so the path is paved in terms of logistics. [ Reply | More ]

it absolutely cannot be done without the administration and classroom teachers being gung ho about it; I did not get the impression on the tour that it's something they're interested in. [ Reply | More ]

You're right in terms of asking the classroom teachers what they'd like. I almost assume an extra pair of hands would always be helpful. It's certainly the selling point of privates, and seems to be part of the success of places like lower lab and anderson. [ Reply | More ]

Most teachers I've talked to do NOT want another pair of hands in the room full time. It's a lot of extra work for the teacher -- time I'd rather she spend working for our children. The lack of qualifications needed for a assistant teacher worry me. Also, don't forget that LL has 28 kids in K. [ Reply | More ]

How do we know teachers want an assistant teacher in the room? That's a LOT of money and no guarantee of the assistant's qualifications. I'm okay just trusting that the school knows what it's doing in this regard. Does anyone know how large the K classes will be, anyway? [ Reply | More ]

Why slow down? It's just a thought about ways to improve our dcs education. Would you not want a decent assistant teacher in the room? [ Reply | More ]

as an "old" nest mom I would say this has not been a priority for the teachers, they seem to be fine without, but the PTA does lots of great things with the money donated by parents so please give freely and trust the money will be well used [ Reply | More ]

np: i am a new nest mom and the class size there is larger than at our zoned public - however, those classrooms were the most well managed I saw of ALL the schools I visited and I went to a lot! it never really bothered me that there are not assistant teachers or a few more kids when they seem to have such a handle on it. The issue of an assistant's qualifications is a real one also...you may get the 'b' level teachers (or not even teachers) who can't get a job elsewhere and will do it for little money. imo not necessary. ITTA! Another new NEST mom -- I'm sure PTA dollars are needed for so many other things! I'm sure there's no shortage of parents who come in to help as requested as well. I saw them on the tour reading in the hallways. [ Reply | More ]

we have assistants in our public and it has been great. for the most part the assistants are working towards certification or are hoping to get an "in" at our school. Many assistants have gone on to get permanent teaching jobs so it is like a year long job interview. It is money well spent, imo. [ Reply | More ]

The assistants at our private (we have two teachers, one assistant per K room) are great and are even staying a second year. Add so much to the classroom. You NEST moms should look into it. [ Reply | More ]
